Driving: YEI will be providing the van, so the only approved driver will be the YEI staff member.

Directions to Trailhead:

To Catherine Creek Trailhead

  • I – 84 east to La Grande.
  • Take exit 265 near Flying J
  • Go right onto highway 203, head south
  • Take highway 203 through Union
  • From Union, OR, on State Highway 203 turn left onto County Road #141 which leads to Forest Road #7785. This will lead you to the Trailhead. Follow signs to Catherine Creek Trailhead.

Note: after you turn right on 203 about 5 miles down you pass Hot Lake Lane, this is the turn for you campground the last night.

At the Catherine Creek Trailhead: There is parking at the TH. Make sure to have a NW parking pass to display on window. The trailhead has picnic tables and outhouses. There is NO POTABLE WATER!

Itinerary:

Day 1,August 21, head directly to Catherine Creek Trailhead and will hike in approximately 1 mile to a backcountry campsite

Day 2, August 22, continue on trail toward Catherine Creek Meadows.

Day 3 August 23, continue on same trail past shelter on to trail 1905 towards Rock Cr.

Day 4, August 24, same camp, day hike towards High Hat Butte or other high point.

Day 5, August 25, continue on loop back towards trailhead.

Day 6, August 26, out to cars, to Hot Lake RV park, de-issue gear, clean all clothes, sleeping bags, gear

Day 7, August 27, back to Portland

Accommodations for final night:

Hot Lake RV Park- They have showers and Laundromat. We have a reservation under Big City Mountaineers name or Rachel Greenwald. No actual tent spot. Large grass area.

Directions to Hot Lake RV Park from trailhead:

  • Go back out forest service road to highway 203 and take a right.
  • At Hot Lake Lane go left.
  • Go ½ mile and RV park will be on your left.

Celebration Dinner: Pizza place-Nicky at front desk has a menu for the pizza place to call ahead if you want. You can just go to the pizza place and sit there too. You can get directions from Nicky
