Arts Commission Report

There was no regular Arts Commission Meeting in September; no report.

Old Business

Advisory Board Members - Twila Abrams was introduced as a new advisory board member. She is founder and president of Pottery Avenue, a boutique selling unique, colorful pottery in a renovated, historic home at 231 E. 100 South in downtown St. George. Abrams originally founded Pottery Avenue, based out of Bremerton, Washington, a wholesale importer of Polish stoneware. The purpose of Pottery Avenue Cottage was to move from a large-scale operation to a smaller, community-based business. A motion was made to accept her as a board member and it was approved unanimously.

Art Tour – at the time of this meeting only 3 tickets had been purchased for Friday’s tour and 5 for Saturday. Linda Sappington asked some of the board members to take names from the list of previous tour participants to solicit for this tour; Kam and Twila agreed to make some calls; Linda will email names and numbers to them.

Publicity: There was an article in the Spectrum but it was edited to a brief mention; the article is also in the Senior Sampler. There will be an ad in Friday’s Spectrum “Where It’s @” which may generate sales for Saturday but probably too late for Friday. Linda asked if people usually show up to purchase tickets on the morning of the tour. Deborah said that there have often been a few 2 – 3 people.

Stephen Wade will conduct the tour at his dealership himself and is looking forward to it. The designer who was originally scheduled to host the tour at Rock Canyon Bank is not available so Clay Denos will act as host. Stephen Brough will lead the tour of Zions Bank’s collection; he has also made the arrangements for lunch at the Painted Pony.

Deborah will drive the route to determine the order that each location will be visited.

Deborah will be driving a bus on each day; Mike King will drive on Friday but is not available for Saturday so another driver will need to be found. Bus captains for the tour are Bette and Kam for Friday; Mary and Linda for Saturday. A bus will remain at Painted Pony for anyone who needs transportation back after lunch.

New Business

The Fashion Show for 2016 National Parks exhibits will take place on November 5th, the theme is Nature and Natural Materials. Five teams each for Tuacahn HS and Hurricane HS have already signed up but other teams may still apply. Board Members were asked to help in two ways: on the event day to help with organizing teams and in advance with soliciting gifts for the winners. Gift certificates for movie tickets, restaurants and similar vendors are needed. Prizes are given to each team member and there are at least 2 winning teams – Museum staff chooses one winner and ballots collected from the spectators determine the other. Prizes for runners up and ties are also very helpful. Each participant gets a small gift that will be provided by the Museum.

The Opening Reception on January 13, 2017 will kick off the 20th Anniversary year for theArt Museum. Deborah asked the board to weigh in on the idea of inviting the public to this opening reception instead of just members and exhibiting artists. The board agreed that it would be a nice gesture and good PR for the Museum.
