Rules
- Any exhibit not conforming to the stated requirements in the schedule may be disqualified.
- Entry Forms and Fees are to be delivered as directed below.
- All produce is to have been grown in the exhibitor’s own garden, except for classes 29 to 34 for which flowers may be purchased. All items of Cookery and Handicraft must be the exhibitor’s own work.
- Members of the Committee, on receipt of an Entry Form, may from time to time, both before and after the Show, visit any produce exhibitor’s garden or allotment.
- Items of Handicraft shown in previous years are not to be re-entered.
- For classes 1-28 exhibitors must garden locally. Classes 64-78 are open to local children and those attending the village school. Classes 64, 68, 71 & 74 are also open to non-resident children.
- No competitor may have more than 2 entries in each class and no item can be entered in more than one class.
- All exhibits are to be staged on the show tables from 9.30 to 11.30am on the day of the Show. Judging is to start at 11.45am.
- If any exhibit is of insufficient merit, or there are fewer than 3 entries in any class, the judge shall have the discretion to withhold any award.
- Any protest must be in writing and lodged with a member of the Committee before 4pm on the day of the Show, accompanied by a Protest Fee of £2.00, refundable only if the protest is upheld by the Committee.
- No exhibit is to be removed before Prize Giving, except with the permission of the Committee.
- Exhibits must be cleared by 5.30pm. Any exhibits not cleared by this time will be at the disposal of the Committee.
- Cash prizes must be collected on the day of the Show. Any cash prizes not collected will be donated to Gardening Club funds.
- Cup winners may arrange to have their cups engraved in the existing style if they wish.
- The Committee shall not be responsible for loss or damage to the property of exhibitors.
- Cash Prizes in each class will be: Adult’s Classes - First Prize only £1. Children’s Classes - First 40p, Second 30p, Third 20p.
Recipe for Cherry Cake (Class 39)
Ingredients
8oz (225g) butter; 8oz (225g) caster sugar; 4 large eggs; 8oz (225g) plain flour; ½ teaspoon baking powder; 9oz (250g) glacé cherries; 4oz (110g) ground almonds; a few drops almond essence; 2 level tablespoons demerara sugar; 1 tablespoon milk
Method
Cream the butter and sugar together. Beat in the whisked eggs, then sift the flour and baking powder and fold into the mixture. Fold quartered cherries and ground almonds into the mix, adding one or two drops of almond essence and the milk. Line and grease the tin and spoon in the cake mix. Sprinkle with the demerara sugar.
Bake at Gas 4, 180C, 350F for 1 hour; cover with foil and continue cooking for a further 30 minutes, or until the cake has shrunk away from the side of the tin. Cool the cake in the tin for 15 minutes before turning it out onto a wire rack to cool.
