Prompting

Remember – What is a prompt?

A prompt is an additional stimulus used to increase the likelihood that a child will respond correctly, that is, a stimulus that is used to help a child complete a task correctly.

Types of Prompts – Response Prompts

Response prompts act on the response, or the behavior. Common response prompts include physical guidance.

Remember – Prompts are meant to be faded!

A prompt hierarchy establishes a systematic plan to fade prompts to the independent level.

For example:

Full physical (hand-over-hand) prompt  Minimal Physical (light touch) at the Wrist  Minimal Physical (light touch) at the Elbow  Independent

This is one example of a prompt hierarchy using physical guidance. Prompts in the hierarchy may be added, removed, or modified based upon the individual learner or skill.

Stay turned on more about other types of prompts next week…

Please let me know if you have any questions – I am always willing to share more information!

Thank you! – Miss Jen 
