Current Events: I hope that everyone had an enjoyable Thanksgiving break. Come out the PTB’s last movie night of the year tonight!
Math: Finding shapes with right angles, locating and counting the sides and vertices, and looking for shapes in our environments are activities that we’ve been exploring in math. We discovered that not every triangle has a right angle. Using our clay and sticks, we made right angles to compare our plane shapes’ angles. On Monday, we started our non-standard measurement unit. After seeing and hearing the flannel board story, Inch by Inch, the children were given 2 rectangular strips, to make into a variety of lengths, which they sequenced from the longest to the shortest strip. After reading, Super Sandcastle Saturday, we developed an anchor chart of different terms from the story relating to measurement. On Thursday, they practiced using a balance scale to use non-standard units of paper clips to find the weight. I am seeing lots of progress with our two minute timed +/- facts. YEAH! Please continue to practice addition and subtraction facts to build instant recall.
Language Arts: Learning the correct strokes for upper case P and R are the handwriting skills that we’ve practiced this week. We have been reading many different versions of, The Gingerbread Man, and comparing these stories, as well as enjoying many of Jan Brett’s stories. We had a lesson about the dictionary, and each child now has a personal dictionary to use for writing that will stay at school in their book bins to use as they write in class. In our sentence writing in word work we have added writing sentences that require an exclamatory mark and discussed how we would read sentences with this punctuation.
Science: Science is soooo much fun!!! Mixing different liquids and solids together, we explored which solids would or would not mix with the liquids.
Social Studies: With Mrs. Flint, the children have been learning about the Mayflower, Pilgrims, and the Native Americans.
