Janet’s Jubilee Jaunt (Mk. 2)

Saturday 26th April 2014

This event is intended to be a ‘social challenge’ to mark the 60th birthday of Janet Pitt-Lewis, long-time and tireless supporter of the LDWA on both sides of Offa’s Dyke. It offers a choice of several circuits from 36 to 9 miles to suit all abilities and inclinations, based on the highly scenic Llangollen Round in North Wales.

The Llangollen Round

This is a high level circular route taking in all the principal summits around the Vale of Llangollen. It has been devised by the Llangollen Branch of Cancer Research UK, and with the aid of local sponsors, has been described in detail in a colourful 24-page booklet. Along with clear route directions, the publication includes information on distance and transport connections. The booklet sells at £4.00 plus £1.00 p&p, with all profits going directly to Cancer Research UK.

The Event Centre

St Collen’s Church Hall is situated on the main A5 alongside the Health Centre.

Parking is very limited but there are long stay car parks nearby in Hall Street, Dean Lane and Brook Street (£3.50 all day) and on street parking out of the town centre.

The event centre will open at 6.00am and close at 9.00pm. Walkers on the 36 mile route should start between 6.30 and 8.00am. Runners or those walking any of the shorter routes should start between 8.00 and 9.00am. On their return, everyone will have limitless tea, coffee and birthday cake, plus a shower if they need one!

No cooked meal will be provided but there are lots of eating and drinking places in the town.

The Walk

Starting from the event centre, the route turns east (left) along the A5 to turn right up Birch Hill and right again into Ty’n Dwr Road, passing the former youth hostel at

Ty’n Dwr Hall. It then climbs east up a long, stony track to join The Round proper.

The Round continues in an anticlockwise direction, as described in the booklet.

There are opportunities to buy food and drink at Trevor basin (café and shop), at the Horse Shoe Pass (café) and in Carrog (pub). There will be checkpoints at the Panorama car park, the Horse Shoe Pass, Carrog and in the Ceiriog Forest. There are shorter routes back to Llangollen from the Panorama (9 miles) and from Worlds End via a particularly spectacular section of the Offa’s Dyke Path (17 miles). You can also return from the Horseshoe Pass via the scenic Clwydian Way (23 miles) and from Carrog (also 23 miles), by catching the steam train. After crossing the northern slopes of Y Foel, you can head north east from Finger Farm down the Allt y Badi lane, to pass Pen Lan and on down into Llangollen (30 miles). The full route of 36 miles continues east from Finger Farm, along the lane to Careg y Big and then descends a track to Ty’n Dwr Hall.

Entry Fee

There is no entry fee as such but everyone taking part must have purchased a copy of the booklet from

or from Mrs. J. Smith, Ty'n Llechwedd, Dinbren, Llangollen, LL20 8EB, enclosing a cheque for £5.00 payable to the Llangollen Round Association.

You are also invited to make a donation to Cancer Research UK by visiting the event “just-giving page”

Kit

This must include maps of the area which are OS Explorer sheets 255 and 256,

or electronic display on a GPS, compass, whistle and mug, together with clothing and footwear appropriate to a day on bleak, high moorland.

Dogs

Dogs accompanied by well behaved owners are welcome on the walk but not in the hall. They should ask to be put on a lead when on roads, near livestock and when crossing the aqueduct.

Llangollen

Llangollen is a busy scenic town on the river Dee. There is plenty of accommodation ranging from camp sites and bunk houses to hotels and B & Bs. For the non-walker there are many attractions to visit and enjoy. Why not take a trip on the canal or the steam railway, visit the dramatic Castell Dinas Bran and the ruins of Valle Crucis Abbey, or be adventurous and have a go at white water rafting or mountain biking!
