Who is Oshun?
She originates in the cycle of Orishas, African (Yoruba) Deities. The Orishas are known not only in Africa, but form the basis of Cuban Santeria, Haitian Voodoo and Brazilian CandombleKetu and are worshipped in African cultures around the world. Oshun is one of the best known and most approachable of the Orishas. She was selected for this pantheon to carry the frequencies of this cosmology in the circle. She is Mama Africa, Queen of the cradle of civilization.
Oshun is associated with sweet waters, the source of life in the desert. She promotes culture and fertility. She is the pursuit of pleasure, beauty and art for its own sake once survival issues are assured. She is intoxicated with herself. She likes to look in a mirror or at her reflection in water. She loves to dance and drum.
Oshun is Goddess of sensuality, sexuality and emotions. Rivers, waterfalls, streams and lakes carry her voice on the waters. She wears gold jewelry and golden yellow clothing. She communicates with her parrot. She is a mediator between the worlds. Her symbol is a cross in circle representing that she mediates between the natural world, the divine world and the world of people. She is also a Goddess of divination. Oshun was sometimes referred to as ‘the Prostitute’
Oshun is associated with the number 5. In our pantheon, she is # 46. 4 + 6 = 10, suggesting a doubling of power in her vibration.

Nature & Description of Dakini
Oshun’s realm is a mindsky version of the continent of Africa, where all flows with sweet waters, the animals are nurtured and culture prospers. The deserts are veined with rivers, her body, vibrant, bedecked in gold.
Oshun brings the blessing of the sweet pure waters of life, promoting abundance, health and crops as the basis for the flowering of beauty and art. This is her gift for the continent, its people and all its wildlife. She is seen in many forms, for she is omni-present.
She comes with a waterfall of life-giving water and she drips golden honey.
As Goddess of dance and movement, she expresses her sensuousness and connection to the earth in this way. She rules earth’s waterways (emotions) and is intuitively connected to her own emotions and subconscious through water.
She dances in her land, her dance of Mother Africa, powerful and seductive. She beats her drum.
She casts her cowrie shells upon the land to bring positive new divination.
A peacock flies in the sky on the left, on the right, a vulture. This refers to an event in the mythos of Oshun. The Orishas were being rebellious so the Creator God, Olodumare, sent drought to the world and this was causing great suffering. The Orishas sent their birds to ask forgiveness, but none could reach the Lord of Heaven’s abode. Oshun however flew in the form of a peacock. She was so determined that she flew close to the sun which burnt and blackened her feathers, turning her into a vulture. Olodumare was so impressed – she had sacrificed her beauty in order to save humanity - that he granted her request and gave her the official title of ‘messenger’. Oshun also has a peacock fan that commemorates this event.
Although Oshun is most often associated with beauty and seduction, her courage and compassion are deep. Below the vulture a small figure of Oshun holds up a mirror in which she looks at herself - a pose she is often associated with.
To the right she holds aloft a parrot, her familiar, who has the brightly colored plumage that she loves. In her heart we see the African lion, revealing at once that she holds the lion as beloved in her heart, that she has the heart of a lion, and that her sweetness can tame and subdue even the king of beasts.
Divinatory Meaning
A gift of life force from Oshun, vitalizing your being with fresh juice.
She empowers through sexual vitality and aliveness.
She bestows strength and courage.
She brings attraction and magnetism.
Good fortune in the areas of commerce, trade and financial flow.
A good time to engage in such pursuits.
The bringer of harmony.
Seek harmonious conditions and surroundings.
Seek to create a harmonious atmosphere to produce the best results.
If there is anything, anyone or any circumstance you wish to attract to you at this time, Oshun is here to help.
She asks you to work with her to find out what you need to do to become more attractive (she says her attractions are obvious)…
What is in the way? What qualities in yourself do you need to amplify in order to magnetize the situation?
She says you already have the answer, you just need to self-reflect (as she does continually, looking in her mirror) and find the beauty in your being that will naturally bring to it everything it needs for completion and self fulfillment.
She enjoys creativity in dress.
Oshun rules the wisdom of pleasure in the body and delights in arts of seduction.
She is quick, vivacious and flirtatious.
It is fine to flirt with everyone and everything in life.
Oshun says that ‘flirting’- engaging with others in ways that play with them, tickle their special receptors, tease and titillate them - often for no other reason than to brighten their day and give them a ‘no strings’ boost and a free hit of juice - is a vivifying and vitalizing way to live life. It fosters lightness and joy.
Be aware that if you have ‘an agenda’, then flirting becomes seduction.
Oshun is quite capable of using both approaches, she says, but you need to be aware of the difference so you can keep your flirting ‘pure’. In this way you flirt as a gift, not a manipulation.
Oshun did use her arts of seduction to acquire the secrets of divination from Obatala (the first of the created gods).
He said ‘Give me honey’, she said, ‘Give me the secrets’. She got them.
She says its OK to use seductive means if you can claim a higher cause.
She had one.
Do you have one when you use your personal powers?
It can simply be your own pleasure. That’s high enough, but if that is the motivation, then you need to ensure that you give to the other in at least equal measure to that which you receive. The gift you give may come in many ways. It can be in the opportunity to bathe in the beauty of who you are. You decide how and under what conditions you offer that.
Sometimes people may not get what they think they want, but make sure you deliver what you think they need.
Do you know how to get what you want? Do you exercise your powers of persuasion?
Oshun says it is time to develop them.
She now uses her powers of allurement to attract people to see, through her beauty, the beauty of nature and of tribal culture, the beauty of her whole world.
Do you feel someone has used their charms on you in a manipulative way?
Review and understand the lesson.
When you don’t know how to respond to an energy that someone is giving you, just be a mirror that reflects it back to them.
Maintain your inner regality at all times. Oshun is sensual and spontaneous, wild and free, but she is always a queen. Regality is a state of inner sovereignty.
You can get more with sugar than vinegar.
Choose kindness and gentleness in your approach.
Pursue the softer approach and the arts of persuasion rather than taking a ‘hard line’.

Her way is through the path of release. Oshun does not hold back, at least when it comes to the pleasure principle. She is here to help you contact, channel and release inner juiciness. All that honey you have inside that you’ve been storing up and maybe you didn’t know you had. Time to let it ooze through your being and drip out of you to bathe everything in golden deliciousness.
She cures womb related problems.
If you are a woman, do you feel you are really contacting your inner bliss? Are you able to surrender to your potential for bliss and let it flow through you, unrestricted and free?
If you are a man, have you helped facilitate this experience in your partner?
Oshun wants you to feel it. You deserve to feel this good.
A gift of ‘amrita’. This could refer to the female ejaculate produced at times of heightened ecstasy and/or the wisdom drops that are the sweet taste of the divine that occur in awakened and awakening beings.
Indications
Drink more water. Your body is asking for it and make sure it is as pure as possible.
Oshun is sweetness itself, but she has a fierce temper. What angers her?
When she sees things that have been spoiled, despoiled, it can make her angry.
Work on anything that has been spoiled.
Be creative in your dress and adornment to please Oshun.

- Oshun requests your participation in meditating with her, dancing with her, creating art with her, making yourself beautiful like her, making love like her, joining with her to promote a wave of sweet life-giving waters and beauty to bless the African continent, to bless her, to bless with her. She wants to reflect the beauty she has been seeing in her self-reflection into the whole land, to reflect her beauty in everything she sees. The beauty of the flourishing of life, thriving wildlife and blossoming culture…
She wants your help.
This meditation is for the physical continent of Africa, and for the Africa that exists within us all. That vast cradle which supports the deepest roots of our potential. That place within which is untamed and rich, brimming with life and unbridled expression.
Cry with Oshun that the world is not is beautiful as if could be. Then visualize what it could be like….
- Oshun wants bestow on you the gift of sensual bliss, the gift of release into your own bliss potential.
You can do this visualization when making love with another person or when self gratifying.
Allow the waves of bliss to build as you make love. See yourself gathering all that energy within that has never found release, all your store of inner honey. When the moment of release occurs, whether as a full orgasm, or a ‘sympathetic climax’, visualize fountains, waterfalls of life-giving sweet juices pouring from you and spreading out from you like rivers of life in a scorched desert. As you visualize this allow your throat to open and release your sounds of ecstatic joy, flowing fluidly from you like a stream, the releasing of waters from a dam….
In this way you receive her blessing and you offer yours.
- Use of divination. Oshun strongly suggests that it would please her very much if you were to start guiding your life by divinatory means. She knows you are already on the path or she would not be before you now…She would like you to get a pendulum and use it to connect with your Higher Self, the Goddess, to guide your decisions and choices.
