Counting to ten in Samoan

WALT: To learn to say the numbers to ten in Samoan.

1.  Explain that we are going to learn numbers to ten.

O le tatou aoaoina numera fa’asamoa mai le tasi ile sefulu.

2.  Go through the numbers with the flash cards. I show the flash cards and say the number, students repeat after me. Do this a few times until students are confident. Practice counting as a whole class.

Fai tau mai le tasi ile sefulu.

Let’s count to ten.

3.  Play blast off. Students stand in a circle and count to ten in Samoan – the person who is number ten has to do something ten times eg Jump, turn, clap – try and include the Samoan words in this:

-  Siva – dance

-  Hula

-  Pati – clap

-  Oso – jump

-  tamo’e – run

Stand in a circle

Fai tau mai le tasi ile sefulu.

Let’s count to ten.

4.  Do the action while the group counts to ten in Samoan.

5.  Introduce the question how many and write on the board:

E fia aute?

How many Aute?

Toe fai mai?

Repeat after me.

6.  Using the flashcards – go through asking how many – students put up hands to give answers – depending on time play the eyes closed game – students close eyes and listen as I drop things into bowl.

7.  Split students into pairs and give each a packet of Aute – students take turns putting out some aute and asking how their partner how many, partner responds in Samoan.
