Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration

HVAC CLOTHING REQUIREMENTS (Competition Uniform)

Khaki short sleeve work shirt and pants, black or brown leather work boots/shoes, black or brown leather beltand safety glasses with side shields or goggles. (Prescription glasses can be used only if they are equipped with side shields. If not, they must be covered with goggles.)

EQUIPMENT AND MATERIALS

1)Supplied by the technical committee:

a)All heating, refrigeration and air conditioning units necessary for the problem

b)Power supply for units

c)Test equipment

d)All tools and supplies to complete the contest

e)All necessary information and material for judges and technical committee

2)Supplied by the contestant:

a)Safety goggles/glasses (full coverage) with side shields. Eye protection MUST be clear. However, if contestant prefers to wear tinted eye protection at the soldering station, he/she may. Clear eye protection MUST be worn at all other work stations.

b)Pressure/Temperature Chart (suggested coverage’s: R-502, R-22, R-12, R-11)

c)Gloves ok for use but NOT required

d)Pen, pencil and black fine tip sharpie

e)Hand-held non-programmable calculator for the contest meeting as well as for the contest. (cell phone calculators are not permitted}

f)All Competitors must create a one-page resume using a word processor and submit the resume

g)A hard copy of the resume must be turned in at the Friday Orientation

  • NOTES
  1. The contestant required items will be inspected the morning of the competition prior to the competition. Competitors will be penalized on a scale of 0 to -5% for missing items.

2.Basic concepts relating to EPA Regulations governing refrigerant use will be necessary for the written test.

  1. Any contestant found having a cell phone in their hands or out for any reason through the entirety of the competition, including the meeting on Friday, will receive a 5% point reduction for each violation. Cell phones are prohibited at the competition site.
  1. There will be an HVAC/R Orientation Friday morning (4/4). Written exams, HVAC and EPA, will be given at that time. Competitors will also compete with the Electrical Controls portion of the competition. Make sure that the competitors are familiar with the electrical schematic supplied in this guideline. The competitor’s schedule for the day will be given to him/her after arrival. The attire for the orientation will be “Official SkillsUSA Dress Reds”. Competition uniform cannot be worn to the Friday orientation. Studentpoint reduction will occur if the competitor is not in appropriate “Official SkillsUSA Dress Reds”. Also, a copy of the competitors resume will be collected as the student arrives for the 8:15orientation. The resume should not be in plastic or in a folder (no covering).

  2. 8:15 to 8:50:Roll Call/Orientation
  3. 9:00 to12:30:Station 3– Electrical Controls, Station 8 – HVAC Written Exam, Station 7 – EPA Written Exam and Seminars
  4. 12:30 to1:15: Lunch

1:30 to 5:00:Station 3 – Electrical Controls, Station 8 – HVAC Written Exam, Station 7 – EPA Written Exam and Seminars

  1. Competitors must have #2 pencils with good erasers and a pen with them for the Friday orientation. If they don’t, their scores will be penalized.
  1. All competitors MUST attend the entire half day’s events on Friday. If a competitor is absent, he/she will be penalized 5% for each event missed. Also, if late the contestant will be penalized a percentage based on how late he or she is. This will be determined by the Orientation Organizer’s discretion. If a competitor is late for an exam, that competitor will be allowed to take the exam but when the test is completed ALL exams will be collected. If a contestant does not take a written exam within the specified time, he/she will not be allowed to make it up.

Mechanical: Pump-down, Cutting & Flaring of Copper & Leak Test

Electrical: Control Wiring, Reading Schematics and ComponentWiring

Forced Air Furnaces: Troubleshooting

Air Flow Measurements: Pitot Tube and a Magnehelic

HVAC Written Exam:50 multiple choice questions

EPA Written Exam: 50 multiple choice questions directly from the EPA federal test

Electrical Troubleshooting: Troubleshooting a residential or light commercial A/C unit

Hard Copy of Resume: To be turned in at the orientation

OTHER SCORING CONSIDERATIONS

Clothing Penalty:0 to -5%

Orientation Penalty:-5% (Late or Non Participation)

Clean-up/ De-Briefing Penalty:-5% (Non Participation)

Tool/Equipment Deduction0 to -5%

Cell Phone Deduction-5% (Each Violation)
