HAPPY NEW YEAR AND WELCOME BACK!

The holidays are over and the New Year has begun. By now you have made New Year's resolutions or have decided not to.

If you have made some New Year's resolutions, what steps can you take to move towards fulfilling them rather then giving up early in the year?

HOW TO MAKE YOUR NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION STICK

If you are like most Americans (88% - according to a GNC poll), you have at least one resolution. And, if you are like the majority of these promise-makers, chances are your resolution is related to health and fitness. According to this GNC poll, 55% promised to eat healthier, 50% resolved to exercise more, and 38% wanted to lose weight.

While resolutions are well-intentioned, unfortunately most people fail at keeping them. With all the hype surrounding these promises, it is easy to get caught up in it without really taking them seriously. It is no wonder then, that more than 75% of Americans would prefer to never make a resolution again (according to the Whole Foods Market New Year's resolution survey).

We live in a throw-away society and even our resolutions are not immune. However, especially for promises that include improving our health, it is in our best interest not to take them too lightly. So, what is the secret to successful resolutions? One important component is help from others. Support from others is important for lasting change, according to the survey which found that 70% of the respondents would be more likely to make positive changes if they did so with someone else.

So share your goals with others who want to see you succeed and will be encouraging; maybe you even end up with a workout partner.

ADD ACTION TO YOUR GOALS

On average only about 20% of us keep our New Year's resolutions, and unfortunately some of the biggest failures are found in fitness resolutions. But don't let the statistics get you down. Major studies show that it only takes 21 - 30 days to break or change a habit or pattern of behavior. There is no doubt, for that initial period of time, it will be easier to fight change and digress from your chosen path. Although knowledge alone is not enough when you want to break a habit, it is the first necessary step to change.
