Endnote for mac handout
UTS: LiBRARYWhat is EndNote / EndNote is a piece of software that will do two things: store and manage the citations you find while doing your research; and then add these citations into the text of a Word document, which will automatically create a styled bibliography at the end of your document.
Creating an EndNote library / * EndNote automatically opens your library when you start the program. If you don’t have a library, create one using File>New. One library is usually enough.
* Saving to a portable drive or USB is advised if you need to work from multiple computers.
* Save a back-up (File>Compressed Library)regularly.
Adding references into EndNote manually / * To create a reference, choose References>New Reference in EndNote
* Then use the drop down menu to select your reference type – web page, book, journal article etc
* Some general rules on authors:
- Place authors names on separate lines
- Put a comma at the end of an institutional author
- * UTS library website has a guide to help you insert references manually
Importing a reference from Google Scholar / * To enable the import option in Google Scholar go to Settings-> Bibliography Manager and choose EndNote from the drop down menu.
* There should now be an ‘import to EndNote’ link beneath every reference when you search
Clicking on that link will send a file with an .enw file extension to your downloads folder.Eg: scholar.enw
*From the downloads folder you can click on the scholar.enw file and then choose open with>and select EndNote X8
but!
* amore efficient method is to train your Mac to always open .enw files by following these steps:
- Go to Finder
- Find your .enw file in the downloads folder
- Control-right click on the file
- Choose ‘get info’ – a pop up panel will open
- On the pop up panel choose the ‘open with’ link
- Choose other from the drop down menu
- Now select EndNote X8 from the applications menu
- Tick the always open with check box and then press the add button
* Finally, press the ‘change all’ button and then press ‘continue’ on the pop up window.
- Now you need to do to open a .enw file into EndNote is find it and click on it.
- You can use this same method with .RIS files and OVID export files too.
Attaching files to a reference. / * You can attach a file to a reference by right clicking on the reference and choosing ‘file attachments’. You can also drag and drop a file onto a reference.
* References can have more than one attachment, e.g. doc, pdf, jpg etc.
Inserting a reference in to Word / * To insert a reference, click on the reference you want to insert in EndNote (it should turn blue).
* Then, go to the Word, select the EndNote X8 toolbar from tools and select insert selected citations
* Or use the floating toolbar (in older versions of Word) and then select the citation icon, then ‘insert selected citations’.
* EndNote should now create an in-text reference and a bibliographic entry simultaneously.
- If you can’t see the floating toolbar you can bring it back by using View>Toolbars>EndNote X8
Adding page numbers to an in text reference / To add page numbers, choose Tools>EndNote X8Edit & Manage Citations, or use the floating toolbar and choose Citations>Edit & Manage Citations
* In the window that pops up, enter your page numbers in the ‘Pages’ field.
Creating a bibliography from a list of references / * To create a list of references without in-text references, select the references you want in EndNote (they should turn blue when you do this. You can use Command-A to select all of your references).
* Then right click on the references and choose ‘copy formatted’.
* Now, go to Word, place cursor where you want the reference list to appear, and paste.
