Chairman’s Annual Report 2011– 2012
By necessity I am writing this report early enough for it to be included with all the other AGM papers, so we will not have had our Heritage Open Day planned for 9th September as I write. Planning this open event has been a major item on our committee agenda. The idea of opening Wilfrid Road, Street's only listed road, was floated at the 2011 Heritage Open day at Strode Theatre. As a result of this idea we have been working closely with Liz Leyshon, Strode Theatre Manager and have received a lot of support through the facilities of the theatre. I anticipate that the result of this collaboration will lead to an exciting Heritage weekend to celebrate some of our industrial history, and I would like to thank Liz for her energies and enthusiasm that have enabled us to provide two talks and a guided tour on Friday and Saturday and access to The Shoe Museum on the Sunday, as well as the opportunity to enter some Wilfrid Road houses.
The society has hosted a varied and interesting programme of speakers and visits, and thanks to those who have arranged these, particularly to Barbara Cowell, our Vice Chairman. It is not just the planning but the booking, checking and liaising that need to be done. I hope your new programme card will encourage you to attend even morenext year - it has been heartening to see such good turn outs for events, a true test of the good choices the committee has made.
On 30thMay I spoke to classes at CrispinSchool as part of their citizenship GCSE work, it being the society's contribution for Civic Day 2012, and it was encouraging to see the interest of the pupils. The talks were well received, and as one ofyour committee said "They are our future membership!" I hope that 2012/13 will be the year that we can encourage our local schools to become "corporate" members so that we can reach out to youngsters and their parents.
I feel the society is becoming more embracing and friendly; a club for anyone interested in their environs. The refreshments before meetings have really contributed to this, so credit is due to Pauline Jones, with Pam Pitman's assistance. Some members purely subscribe to help us to fund our projects and to add weight to our consultative voice which is a very important function. I am sure you all know people who are not likely to turn out for meetings but who have the best interests of Street at heart (and wouldenjoy our newsletter), and £7 is a small sum to pay for this, so please make 2012/13 the year you help to boost our numbers further.
I am pleased we managed to get the Crispin Centre mural refurbished and interpreted andalso that an anonymous benefactor has seen our beloved trough at the Cross refurbished too.
Thanks go to TreasurerCatherine Atkins for so many things - keeping us financially viable and paying our bills, being membership secretary and newsletter editor and for all the walking for the Street walk, and to Hilary Napper for being secretary and doing such a fine job minuting our meetings, liaising with the printers and keeping track of Wilfrid Road volunteers.
We have welcomed two new members onto the committee this year, Paddy Thompson and Colleen Hinde, and I am hoping they wish to continue to make their valuable contributions. Linda Wilson, Deanne Silmon,Mary Hecks and Muriel Mudie have made up the rest of the committee and it has been great working with them all, we have got a lot done and had some fun doing it too! Mary has expressed her wish to step down this AGM, and we will be sorry to lose her. She has been a stalwart committee member always willing to join in and get stuck in! So who is going to step forward? Finally the website is proving popular and thanks go to David Atkins for keeping it up to date as a useful tool for members.
In advance of the AGM I have to give my apologies as I had the choice of missing Heritage Open Day which we have been working on for so long or the AGM, and although I am sorry to miss Elaine's talk (having heard her speak before I know I am missing a good 'un) I decided to see the open day through.

Events Annual Report 2011– 2012
The Annual General Meeting in September celebrated the 10th Anniversary of the Society. The speaker was Caroline Gould, her topic being the 'Buildings of Street'. She gave a fascinating talk which included the career of Street architect George Skipper.
A visit to the Clarks Westway Distribution Centre took place in October. Members were given a guided tour and talk.
The November meeting welcomed Sharon Walker, the current Rector in Street. She reflected on her experiences during her first year in Street.
The December Christmas meal and talk took place at Knights Fish and Chip Bar in Glastonbury. Bill Knight gave a tour and talk on the historical area followed by a supper.
The speaker in January was Roger Martin whose topic was 'Why population matters'. This proved interesting and encouraged many questions.
Graham Coles, Glastonbury Town Crier was the speaker for February. He spoke of the History of Criers with some memories of his own.
Tony Dowden from the Levels and Moors Agency spoke on the 'Drainage of the Somerset Levels' at the March meeting. This was a most interesting topic with members asking many questions.
In April Tom Mayberry told members about the new Museum and Heritage Centre for Somerset.
The first members’ visit was to see the new Museum and Heritage Centre in Taunton in May.
For the June members’ event The Street Society hosted an historical guided tour of Street for both its members and Frome Civic Society members.
A reciprocal visit to Frome was the July event which proved to be an interesting tour of the town on a pleasant evening.
