PRINCIPAL CERTIFICATION A SCHOOL FIRST IN AUSTRALIA
More than 50 principals from throughout Australia will converge on Melbourne today to launch the Prototype Trial for an industry-first certification.
The Honourable Susan Lenehan, Chair of the Board of Principals Australia Institute will launch the Trial at Rydges on Swanston and says the Principal Certification initiative is an effective way of achieving sustainable social change for students and the communities in which they live.
“Principals are central to quality schooling and student learning,” says Ms Lenehan. “Educational research for over 25 years supports this – students need to be led by professionals.”
Ms Lenehan also emphasises the importance of principals taking the lead on certification as a collective effort.
“Principal Certification champions exemplary educational leadership and elevates the professional standing of principals in the community,” says Ms Lenehan. “It is also about student learning and whole-school improvement. It benefits the entire local community.”
The Trial is representative of the certification model in that it provides incentives for principals to collaborate, rather than compete, in attaining high professional standards.
Brad Moyle, Principal at Rushworth P-12 College in Victoria says this is an important aspect for many of the principals participating in the trial.
“The collegiate aspect of the Principal certification Prototype Trial is so important to a semi-rural school such as ours,” says Mr Moyle.
“The opportunity to network with our colleagues at a high level is invaluable.”
