Improving Outcomes for People Experiencing Mental Health Crisis
Notes for People Taking Part in Focus Groups
Thank you very much for agreeing to take part in a Focus Group discussion. This note is to explain why the groups are taking place and how they will run.
The Groups are part of a consultation process, which also involves a survey and discussions with professionals, but Birmingham Is keen to make sure that at least 80% of the contributions are from people who have used the services, or close to someone who has- as a carer or family member.
In line with national policy Birmingham wants to make sure that the mental health system and all the groups who work with it are responding to people’s mental health crises as effectively as possible- keeping them safe and making a future crisis less likely to happen.
These are the main themes we will be discussing with you, so that you can have an idea ahead of the session of what will be covered.
1. What urgent and emergency access to crisis care is needed in Birmingham? What was your experience and how could things be improved?
2.What does the quality of treatment and care in crisis need to be like in Birmingham? What can your experience tell us about assessment, treatment options and the quality of services?
3 Prevention- what do you think would help to stop a crisis happening, or make its impact less serious. How do we best help people from getting into a crisis in the first place?
The sessions will last for 90 minutes and will have no more than 15 people
They will be run by the Institute of Public Care, Oxford Brookes University
All contributions will be completely confidential
No other professionals will be present
We can reimburse fares if you let us know on the day
