INTRODUCTION
Focus
The focus of this component is your analysis of important aspects of your school or district in terms of their impact on student learning.
Overview
You will present documents and written commentary that, taken together, clearly demonstrate your knowledge of your school or district. You will identify and describe significant aspects of the community, the students, the organizational structure, and the instructional programs of your school or district; you will analyze how these particular factors impact student learning and how they have shaped your activities as a school leader. You will write one commentary in response to specific questions, and you will write one reflection which will enable you to analyze the strengths and needs of your school or district.
Before you begin it is critical that you first read through all the material contained in the Candidate Bulletin and in this Component. Be sure you understand and are completely familiar with all the questions, directions, strategic decisions, scoring criteria, and all other relevant material.
Standards The Interstate School Leaders Licensure Consortium (ISLLC) Standards for School Leaders will frame and guide the work that you will do for this component. The specific standards and indicator statements measured by this component are included at the end of this Component in the section EVALUATION CRITERIA. It is critical that you read and understand the importance of these standards before you begin this assessment activity. The score you receive on your Portfolio will be a direct reflection of how well you understand and implement these standards as you carry out your responsibilities as a school leader.

QUESTIONS AND DOCUMENTATION
Following the directions given above and in the Candidate Bulletin, respond to the questions below. Before you begin, read the STRATEGIC DECISIONS and EVALUATION CRITERIA described at the end of this Component.
1. THE COMMUNITY
QUESTIONS:
What would you identify as the most significant features of the community in which your school or district exists? How do these features affect student learning? How do these features help shape your decisionmaking and your activities as a school leader?
DOCUMENTS:
These materials should help you identify and document important features of the community that affect student learning and that impact your activities as a school leader. Materials could include demographic, historic, cultural or other information that would help you present a view of the kind of community in which the school or district exists: census data, descriptions of economic factors or trends, newspaper clippings, etc.
Maximum length: commentary 2 pages; supporting documents 5 pages
2. REFLECTION
QUESTIONS:
What do you consider to be the greatest strengths of the system in which you work, and what do you consider to be the greatest challenges posed by the system? How do you hope to draw on these strengths and address these challenges in order to promote the success of all students?
Maximum length: commentary 2 pages
1
STRATEGIC DECISIONS
The school or district you will analyze
For schoolsitebased administrators, this will be the school in which you are working; for district or central office administrators, this will be the district in which you are working.
Collecting and selecting data
All data and notes that you eventually select to support your written commentaries should help you address how particular aspects of your school or district impact student learning. It will be important, as you collect, that you evaluate the documents to verify that they provide you with specific information that will help you write about these impacts on learning. You may find it helpful, in order to provide a fuller explanation of your current educational context, to have documentation that will enable you to provide a historical context for your responses.
Writing Style
Your written responses will be evaluated based on their responsiveness to the questions and evidence of the relevant ISLLC standards. You will not receive additional credit for including information in your responses that is not asked for by the questions.
Adequate Rationales
Some questions will require you to explain why you made particular decisions and/or selected certain courses of action. Merely stating that policy guidelines required you to act in the way that you did will not be an adequate response.
Peer Review You have the sole responsibility for the development of the ISLLC Portfolio. Peer and/or mentor review of your work is permitted, but all written submissions must be completed by you. It is strongly suggested that you get an experienced colleague to help guide you through the process and review your work prior to submission.
