POLICYSTATEMENT

BradfordAcademyrecognisestheimportanceofgoodfiresafetypracticestoensurethesafetyofall employees,studentsandvisitors.

Therefore,itisimperativethatallproceduresareputinplace,adheredtoandconstantlycheckedtoensure thatallstaffareawareoftheirresponsibilitieswhenafirealarmisactivated.

BradfordAcademyemployeeshaveadutyofresponsibilitytoreportanypotentialfirehazardsandtoco- operatefullywiththefireproceduretoensurethesafeevacuationofall.

Thispolicyhasbeenreferencedwith the Regulatory Fire Reform Order 2005,HSESafetyatWork,HMGovernmentFireSafety.

INTRODUCTION

Onhearingthefirealarmsound,ALLpersonswithinthebuildingmustevacuateimmediatelywiththe exceptionoftheFireOfficers andReception.

TheFireAssemblyPointislocatedonthehardsurfacedareaattheentrance/exittoTeasdaleStreet.Each fireexitdoorhasaroutewhichleadstotheassemblypointanddoorswillautomaticallyopenonalarm.

For the Primary the fire assembly point is on the 4G football pitch in front of the appropriate year signs.

Allemployees,studentsandvisitorsmustbesignedoffandmustonlyreturntothebuildingwheninstructed bytheFireOfficer.

Allvisitorswillbegiven information regarding thefirealarmprocedure at the reception (this is in the form of an information leaflet)itistheirresponsibilitytonotetheirnearestfireexit.

Disabledrefugeareas arebasedineachstairwellandusersshouldwaittobeattendedtobyfireofficers.Liftswill notbeinoperationduringactivations.

Primary refuge points:

In the first instance, next to the external door of PG08, the decking next to the corridor exit by PG02 and under the decking next to PL02. If these locations are inappropriate the refuge point will be in the John Craig Centre, which will also act as a refugee point for children in PE kit during bad weather.

Secondary refuge points:

Stairwell 1 Lower ground, stairwell 1 ground

Stairwell 2 First Floor

Stairwell 3 First Floor

Stairwell 4 First Floor

Weeklytestswillbecarriedoutonthealarmsystemsandfullevacuationswillbeheldperterm.Staffwillbe trainedonthefireproceduresatthestartoftheiremploymentandallevacuationslogged.

RESPONSIBILITES

Allemployeesshouldfamiliarizethemselveswithallthefireexitsandescaperoutesfromtheschool.Special attentionshouldbepaidtotheevacuationroutefromtheirmainteachingarea.

Allemployeesshouldbefamiliarwiththelocationoffirefightingequipmentandthedifferenttypes available.Fireextinguishersshouldonlybeusediftrainedtodoso.

NEVERPUTYOURSELFINDANGER

1.1FireOfficer–isresponsiblefor:

1.1.1Overseeingthefullfireprocedure.

1.1.2Loggingallevacuations.

1.1.3Beingawareofpossiblestaffinterventioninfightingafire.

1.1.4Callingthefirebrigade,ifnecessary,andliaisingwiththemwhentheyarrive.

1.1.5Supervisingthe“sweeping”ofthebuilding.

1.1.6Givingthe“allclear”inthecaseofapracticeormaliciousevacuation.

1.2SeniorAdministrator(Philippa Darbandi)–isresponsiblefor:

1.2.1Pupilregisters, stafflist,staffsigningoutbook,visitors’book,coversheetandmegaphone areall takentotheassemblyarea.

1.2.2EnsurehomeTeamsignsareputinposition.

1.2.3Thatalladministrativestaffareaccountedfor.

The primary office staff will take out Pupil registers, staff list, staff signing out book, visitors’ book, to the assembly

1.3KitchenManager (Dawn Terblanche)

1.3.1ToaccountforallkitchenstaffandlunchtimepersonnelandwillreporttotheFireOfficeronduties.

1.4FireCommanders

1.4.1FireCommanders(seniormanagement)-ThePastoralteamsweeptheSchooland reportdirectlyto theFireOfficerwheretheywillbegivenareasofresponsibility.

1.4.2Ifyouhavenopupilsunderyoursupervisionwhenthefirealarmsounds,youwillsweepaportionofthebuildingonyourwayout,checkingthatallroomstoiletsandstairwellsareempty(seeAppendix forsweepdutyplan).

1.4.3PastoralSupportteammustmonitorallFireExitdoorsensuringstudentsstaycalmandaredirected aroundthebuildingtotheassemblypoint.

2PROCEDURESFOREVACUATION

2.1Discoveryoffire.

2.1.1Upondiscoveryofafireactivatethenearestfirealarm.

2.1.2Ifyouhavechildreninyourcare,ensurethattheyaresafelyevacuated,thenassesswhetheritmay bepossibletotacklethefireyourself.

2.1.3Alertthedesignatedfireofficerconcerningyouractionandwhetherthereisaneedtosummonthe fireservice.

2.2Evacuationprocedurefromaclassroom.

2.2.1Uponhearing thefirealarm,instructyourclasstostandquietlyandwaitforyoutoassistintheir evacuation.

2.2.2Allpersonalbelongingsandequipmentshouldbeleftintheclassroom.

2.2.3Closeallwindows.

2.2.4Inanorderly,supervisedmanner,studentsshouldfollowtheevacuationroutefromtheclassroom.

2.2.5Greenfireexitsignspointthewaytothenearestexit.

2.2.6Close(butdonotlock)classroomandfiredoorsbehindyouasyouleavethebuilding.

2.2.7Ifanypartofyourevacuation routeisblocked,thenproceedbythesafestalternative routetothe assemblypoint.

2.2.8Pleasedonotrun.

2.2.9Undernocircumstancesshouldtheliftsbeusedtoevacuatethebuilding.

2.2.10WaitatthefireassemblypointwithyourHomeTeamtobesignedoffandinstructedtoreturntothe building.

2.3Peoplewithdisabilities

2.3.1Eachstaircasehasadisabledrefugelocatedateachlandinglevelforassistinginsafeevacuation.

2.3.2AnLSAisassignedtoeachstudent,theymustindicatethatachildispresentatthedisabledrefuge bypressingtherefugealarmbuttonandremainingwiththechilduntilassistancearrives.

2.4Onarrivalatthedesignatedassemblypoint

2.4.1Studentsmustlineupquietlyinpairs,inalphabeticalorderintheirHomeTeamssothataregistercan betaken. OneoftheofficestaffwillbringtheHomeTeamregisterstotheassemblypoint,sothata checkcanbemade.

2.4.2Ensurethatnooneleavesthepremises.

2.4.3LearningGuideswillremainwithstudents,keepingthemcalm,untilfurtherinstructionsarereceived.

2.4.4 Each HeadofHousewillcollecttheregistersfortheir

HousegroupandwillreporttotheschoolFireOfficeronduty.

2.4.5Allstaff,notinvolvedwithregisteringaHomeTeam,willreporttotheAdministrationManagertobechecked offonthestafflist.Thesestaffshouldthenhelpoutwiththegeneralsupervisionofthestudents.

2.4.6Visitorsshouldbeaccompanied totheassemblyareasothattheycanbecheckedoffagainstthe visitors register.

2.4.7Undernocircumstancesenterthebuildinguntilthe“ALLCLEAR”hasbeengiven.

2.4.8AbsentLearningGuideswillneedtobecoveredbytheSupplyorCoverSupervisors whotookthe registerpreviously–HoDmightneedtocheckwithAdministrationManagerifthereisanyabsentLearning Guideincasetheirabsenceisunexpectedorunexplained.

3FIREALARM

3.1DuringChangeofLesson

Ifafirealarmsoundsduringachangeoflessonstaffmustensurethattheirclassroomsareempty andthenassistthestudentstothenearestfireexitandtheassemblypoint.

3.2DuringBreak/Lunchtime

Ifthefirealarmsoundsduringbreakorlunch,studentsshouldmaketheirwaytotheassemblypoint area,managedbytheDutyStaff.

Duty staff, lunchtime supervisors orstaffrunning aclub oractivity should ensure theirareas are emptyandthenassistthestudents tothenearest fireexitandroutethemtotheassembly point. Pleaseensurethatalldoorsareclosed(notlocked)uponexit.Attheassemblypointstudentsshould lineupintutorgroupstoaidthecheckingofregisters.

3.3AtAfterSchoolClubs/Activities

Atthestartoftheafterschoolactivityaregistermustbetaken.RegistersshouldbeE-Mailedtothe officeby15:40.Ifyoudiscoverafire,orthealarmsounds,afterthenormalschoolday(becauseyou arerunningadetention,afterschoolcluboractivity)pleasefollowtheaboveproceduresandensure thatstudentsleavethebuildinginanorderlywaybythenearestexit.

3.3.1 Use of school for sporting, lettings (evening & weekend use)

The sports center team will evacuate the site as per their SOP –

3.3.1 Upon hearing the fire alarm, the sports center team will make their way to the area of the booking (Sports Hall, Primary Hall, Auditorium, class room etc) to assist in the evacuation.

3.3.2 All personal belongings and equipment should be left in the site.

3.3.3 All windows, where possible will be closed.

3.3.4 In an orderly, supervised manner, members/users should follow the evacuation route from the area.

3.3.5 Green fire exit signs point the way to the nearest exit.

3.3.6 The academy doors will be close but not locked. The fire doors automatically shut.

3.3.7 If any part of the evacuation route is blocked, then proceed by the safest alternative route to the assembly point.

3.3.8 The staff and members/users will wait at the fire assembly point until instructed to return to the Building by the manager on duty/fire service.

3.4 Sports Centre (Evenings & Weekend use)

3.4.1 Upon hearing the fire alarm, the sports center team will scatter around the site to their specific zones to assist in the evacuation.

3.4.2 All personal belongings and equipment should be left in the sports center.

3.4.3 All windows, where possible will be closed.

3.4.4 In an orderly, supervised manner, members/users should follow the evacuation route from the Sports center (Dependent on the location of the fire this will be to the main evac site at the school reception or the 4g/grass pitches).

3.4.5 Green fire exit signs point the way to the nearest exit.

3.4.6 The sports centre doors will be close but not locked. The fire doors automatically shut.

3.4.7 If any part of your evacuation route is blocked, then proceed by the safest alternative route to the assembly point.

3.4.8The staff and members/users will wait at the fire assembly point until instructed to return to the building by the manager on duty/fire service.

3.5Primary School

3.5.1Children in top floor classrooms exit through the external door go out of top gate and down the outer path to 4g pitch

3.5.2Children on ground floor exit through the external door and go out of the Early Years gate on to the 4g pitch

During the lunchtime period

3.5.3Children in the Dining Hall will go out the dining room fire doors, around the building and through the Early Years gate and on to the 4g pitches

Children in the lower playground go out the Early Years Gate and on to the 4g

Children in the Tennis Courts/top playground go out to the top gate and on to the 4g

During Breakfast Club

3.5.4Breakfast Children to go out through the dining room fire doors around the building, through the Early Years gate and on to 4G pitches, Breakfast register to be taken outside.

After School clubs

3.5.5If on the lower floor of the school exit through the closest external door and go through the Early Years gate on to the 4G pitches

If on the upper floor exit through the closest external door, go through the top gate and walk down on to the 4G pitches - Staff sweep

SLT sweep from their offices towards the centre of school checking classrooms and toilets.

A member of staff works through the dining area, through the staff area into Year 6 and back into the centre of school.

A member of staff starts at ICT and meets with SLT in the centre of school.

Facilities team locates at the Fire alarm box in the primary entrance, one of them will cover the sweep of any absent staff member.

3.6FireAlarmTests

AlarmtesteveryMondayat09:00am.TheFireOfficerisresponsibleformaintainingalogofallfire alarmtests.Afullevacuationwillbeheldeveryterm.

4OTHERISSUES

4.1ControlofMaterialsintheForum

4.1.1All display panels and other similar materials should have a class 1 surface when tested in accordancewithBS476:part7.

4.1.2When tested inaccordance with BS 5852, allupholstered furniture should resist ignition bythe smolderingsource(ignitionsource0)andtheflamingsource(ignitionsource5).

4.2SuitableArrangementsaretobemadethatwhilstbuildingisoccupied,allescaperoutesareunlocked andkeptaccessfree.Maglocksmustberegularlymaintainedandkeptingoodworkingorderas theyarecrucialtothesafeevacuationofthebuilding.
