Goals: To produce graduates who 16.0905 SPANISH B.A. At the end of the 2 students graduated
exhibit the following characteristics: bachelor’s program. in May, Aug. and Dec. of the year 2000.
*Correspondence of the program goals with the characteristics below is indicated with numbers in parenthesis.1. Engage in mature, independent thought and express that thought effectively in oral and written communication.
2. Understand the critical and scientific methodologies academic disciplines employ to discover knowledge and ascertain its validity.
3. Apply sound standards of analysis and evaluation to reach logical decisions.
4. Understand the role and applications of technology and science in the solution of the problems of a changing world.
5. Demonstrate a critical understanding of the world’s historical, literary, philosophical and artistic traditions. / I. Productive skills: Students will he able to speak using correct so as to be comprehensible to a native speaker. Students will be able to write using correct spelling, punctuation, vocabulary, and grammar.
Receptive Skills: Students will be able to comprehend the speech of native speakers of Spanish and read and comprehend authentic texts authentic texts in Spanish.* (1) / I. Productive skills: 95% of students taking the ACTFL examination in Speaking and Writing at the time of graduation will achieve the Intermediate-Mid score.
Receptive Skills: 95% of students taking the ACTFL examination in Listening and Reading will achieve a score of Intermediate-High. / I. Productive skills: two students in Spanish (100%) scored Intermediate-Mid or higher on speaking; two students (100%) scored Intermediate-Mid or higher on Writing
Receptive skills: Two students (100%) scored Intermediate-High or higher on Listening; two students (100%) scored Intermediate High or higher on Reading.. / I. 100% of program majors in Spanish met the goals of the program. However, the department continues to emphasize listening and speaking, especially at the Elementary and Intermediate levels of the program, in order to prepare more students for study at the advanced level. The department instituted a peer evaluation program to increase communicative teaching practices and determine the need for other changes.
8. Demonstrate mastery of their chosen field of study in preparation for a successful productive life. / II. Students completing the program will be able to locate and use necessary print and computer bibliographic materials for analytical research. They will be able organize the results of their research into comprehensible form and express them in written and spoken Spanish and English. (2,3,4) / II. During their senior year all students will be required to take a capstone course, Senior Seminar, in which, among other assignments, they will be required to write a 10-page research paper in Spanish and demonstrate proper research procedures and MLA style, scoring at least 80%. Students will present this paper to the department faculty at the Senior Colloquium. / II. Two (100%) students in Spanish completed the senior paper with a grade of 80% or better. Four students in Spanish presented the results at the Senior Colloquium / II. No action indicated at this time. Continue to monitor this objective.
III. Students will benefit from exposure to Hispanic culture throughout the program. They will be required and encouraged to take advantage of resources available on campus, in the area, and on the Internet that relate to Hispanic culture. All students will be strongly encouraged to spend a significant period of time in a study abroad program in a Hispanic country. It is expected that half of all majors will study abroad. (5,6) / III. At all levels of the program students will be required to demonstrate, through written projects, oral reports, and free discussion, awareness of Hispanic culture. In literature and culture classes in particular, students will demonstrate the cultural benefits gained from study abroad in a Hispanic country and from local venues. Participation in local events will be assessed through graded reports in all classes. The number of students studying abroad will be determined with the Senior Survey. / III. 2 (100%) students in Spanish studied abroad in a Hispanic country. Most students in all classes participate in at least two local cultural events per class / III. To increase the numbers of students studying abroad, we will continue to generate funds for scholarships to support study abroad and continue to stress the importance of study abroad in each course from the beginning of the program. Alumni of study abroad programs participate in recruitment. The department continues to sponsor cultural events. Class syllabi will continue to require participation in Hispanic cultural events including encounters with Hispanic students, international films, Internet pen pals, etc.
IV. Most graduates of the program will engage in discipline-related activities which will utilize skills from the program. By virtue of its literary, cultural, and linguistic dimensions, the program is a humanistic discipline; therefore, it is expected that all students will benefit in their lives and careers with the general enhancement of a liberal arts education. (8) / IV. The Senior Survey and the Alumni Survey will be used to gather data on post- undergraduate careers. The two major areas addressed by the Senior Survey are projected and actual graduate school application and acceptance rates and projected and actual employment application and acceptance rates. / IV. One student applied and was accepted to graduate school in the discipline. No data is available on one student. / IV. In the Senior Seminar students will continue to research employment opportunities, develop resumes, and register with the Placement Office. Graduate program announcements are posted in the department and brought to students' attention in the Senior Seminar. The alumni survey will be used to track the progress of graduates and identify student needs.
