Devotional: John Bogle
Margin in life: Jesus did things “on the way” in the life. Jesus took the time to help the woman in Mark. We need to have margin in our lives to be responsible to the people in our lives.

ISI Topic: Planning and Organization – John Bogle, Jena Jensen, and Dave Bostrom
John Bogle
- Embrace the realities of life that you are living (having kids, single, etc.)
- Good organizational strategy is one the works for you – not something that works for everybody else, except you
- Ask for help in getting organized (students, secretaries, etc)
- Find people in your ministry that will put pressure on you to be organized and give them permission to put pressure on you so that you get ahead and stay ahead
- Create a deadline – Give other permission to call you if you haven’t received it yet
- Timelines:
- A special evening event, have all details completed one month in advance so things can be tweaked at the end and no last minute rushes
- A 3-day weekend should have all details planned 3 months ahead of time
- A week long event, 7 months ahead of time
- Get a web master who is passionate about keeping things on task
- Pick one time during the week, close door, phone is silent, sit down and plan all of your organization details. Don’t leave until you get it done. Tell people that you are busy. Take everything and set it aside. Pray and just stop and turn off all of the sounds and ask God what needs to happen in the ministry and write down the thoughts, and a week later address those issues at your next time so that you have a week to think about them.
- If you like change and trying new things, don’t make a lot of new changes at once, make plans to try the new things once a quarter etc.
- Plan entire school year by September 1 and following Summer by November 1
- Stop saying you are too busy. You are no busier than anybody else. If you are doing too many things, stop doing something. If you are getting value because of how busy you need to change your thinking.
Jena Jensen
- Her church plans together as a staff in March of 06 up to Summer of 08. That way men’s retreat, women’s retreat, and youth conferences don’t fall all in the same month and kill a family’s finances
- Do broad overview planning. You can always change the details later if you have the date secured
- She does events on Sundays or Wednesdays (the days of youth group). It’s hard to plan events on other days of the week
Dave Bostrom
- Scope and Sequence charts so you know what you have taught and how long ago it was covered
- 2-4 year of choosing curriculum is very helpful
- Book study one year, then Old Testament survey, summers he goes to electives
- Spend a day or two and do a little bit of work and you will free up a lot of your time later. It will make your parents happy to know ahead of time (and your leaders will see what topics you have planned ahead of time)
