(“HHS”) issued the Privacy Rule to implement the requirement of the Health
Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (“HIPAA”). 1 The Privacy Rulestandards address the use and disclosure of individuals’ health information—called“protected health information” by organizations subject to the Privacy Rule — called“covered entities,” as well as standards for individuals' privacy rights to understandand control how their health information is used. Within HHS, the Office for Civil
Rights (“OCR”) has responsibility for implementing and enforcing the Privacy Rulewith respect to voluntary compliance activities and civil money penalties.
A major goal of the Privacy Rule is to assure that individuals’ health information isproperly protected while allowing the flow of health information needed to provideand promote high quality health care and to protect the public's health and well-being.
*** We will be discussing injuries in this class. On occasion, we will use a Cactus Shadow athlete as an example to enhance the understanding of the injury in question. Names will not be used by the instructor nor should the students mention the names of said athletes. Also, any details of the injury should never be repeated outside the classroom as it would be a violation of HIPAA. This includes sharing information with parents, friends, teachers, coaches, teammates, press, and/or on social media. DO NOT SHARE INFORMATION ABOUT OTHER STUDENT ATHLETES! ***
