WPT to Air Statewide Tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Monday, Jan. 17

Wisconsin Public Television (WPT) will offer tape-delayed excerpts from Wisconsin's 31st-annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Tribute ceremony honoring the late civil right leader. The program will air at 9 p.m. Monday, Jan. 17 on WPT.

A live broadcast of the event also will be available starting at noon on The Wisconsin Channel, a WPT Digital TV channel and the program will be streamed and archived at wpt.org on the Web.

The ceremony, themed “Heal the World,” will celebrate Dr. King’s life in words and music with a culturally inclusive group of performing artists. This year’s guest speaker is Author Michelle Alexander.

As part of the ceremonies, Gov. Scott Walker will present the official state proclamation and honor the recipients of the 2011 Martin Luther King Heritage Awards.

U.S Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin and Wisconsin Public Radio’s Jonathan Overby will serve as event emcees.

Program participants include the Celtic Pipers Honor Guard, Native American Dancer Mark Denning, Madison Youth Choirs, Milwaukee’s Latino Strings Arts Program, Mt. Zion Children’s Choir, MLK Celebration Choir and Highway to Heaven Big Band.
