1) Why did Truman launch the “Loyalty Review Board” in 1947?
In 1947, President Truman launched the Loyalty Review Board to investigate the possibility of communist spies in the government. There was a fear everyone was turning COMMUNIST and things started to get OUT OF CONTROL!
2) As a result of #1, what types of criminal sentencing happened?
In 1949, 11 communists were sent to prison for violating the Smith Act of 1940 (first peacetime anti-sedition law since 1798) in supporting the overthrow of the American government. The ruling was upheld in Dennis v. United States (1951). Employees were investigated and 2,900 resigned!
3) What was the H.U.A.C and how did it play a part in the “new red scare” or even the McCarthy Trials?
In 1938, the House of Representatives established the Committee on Un-American Activities (HUAC) to investigate "subversion" (opposition to the government). In 1948, Congressman Richard M. Nixon led the conviction of Alger Hiss, a prominent ex-New Dealer. Americans began to join in on the hunt for communist spies who were thought to be living in America.
In 1950, Truman vetoed the McCarran Internal Security Bill, which authorized the president to arrest and detain suspicious people during an "internal security emergency." Congress overrode Truman's veto and passed the bill. It was like a ‘Witch Hunt”…You still hear this term today!!!
4) What was “Blacklisting” and how would feel if it happened to you during the “Red Scare”?
There was a list of Hollywood Actors made and around 500 actors, writers and producers were placed on the BLACK or BAD list! Their careers were ruined, because they were on this BAD –LIST and many never acted or were hired again. Much like back in Salem during the 1690’s!!!
