Dear GPA Friends,
In Kiswahili we say “Heri na fanaka za mwaka mpya!” Blessings and prosperity for the new year! We hope you had a happy holiday season and wish you all the best for a fulfilling, healthy 2013. With this newsletter, we are starting a new tradition of beginning the calendar year with an annual report.
GPA recently held its annual meeting and thanked our dear friend and Executive Director, Erin Brandt. Erin served this organization with dedication, intelligence and passion during her five year tenure, developing our grants management and other systems and procedures. Fortunately, Erin will continue to consult with us as we transition our new Executive Director, Jamie Brooks.
We welcome Jamie Brooks to our team as our new Executive Director. Jamie is a nonprofit manager and attorney with extensive experience in agency leadership and grant writing. She will manage GPA, work with both our Governing Board and Africa Board, assist with fundraising efforts, communications and compliance issues. Please feel free to contact Jamie at any time at .
Grant Activity:
This year we had over 50 grant submissions, a record for the organization! We are proud that youth led projects recognize our desire to support them. With your help, this year GPA made four first time grants to organizations in Kenya, South Africa and Nigeria and is now positioned to make 4 additional second grants. Second grants are a vital component of the GPA mission as they allow us to further assist youth in expanding their network and grow their vision.
Grantee Profile:
In 2010 Ntokozo Dube requested $5000 from GPA to fund a bike tour business in his hometown of Kliptown, Soweto South Africa. With grant funding he took classes to obtain a tourism license, purchased bicycles and equipment, trained two youth in his community to become guides and learned to market his business. The business thrived offering authentic tours in the community – bringing people to people. TKD Tours recently applied for a second grant in order to leverage their resources, expand their cultural tours and further market their business to a larger audience.

We are also looking forward to providing second grants to MorningStar Humanitarian Service of Nigeria who wish to provide expanded vocational skill building program and enterprise development for youth and widows. The Center for Health, Environmental and Safety Studies (CHESS) providing “wealth to waste” training to 150 impoverished youth in Nigeria’s largest city, Ibdan, using a novel technique for transforming waste to energy. Finally, Kito International based in Kenya hopes to utilize GPA funding to complete a business incubator serving 60 former street youth by providing business start-up expertise, mentoring assistance, internships and job creation.
One of the hallmarks of GPA grant-making is our reliance onproposals from those who will benefit from successful grants. GPA works with a dedicated African Advisory Board, professionals with extensive personal knowledge of the communities GPA serves and who provide the first review and approval for all grants. Africa but soon to be in all countries -- provide local support to grantees, assist them in developing a network of support as well as site-visits for all second-grant candidates.
One of our dedicated Africa Advisory Board Members is Lindiwe Sangweni-Siddo. Lindi is the Managing Director of the Birchwood Hotel and O.R. Tambo Conference Center. She is also co-owner of the Soweto Hotel and Conference Center making her the first owner of a 4 star hotel in Johannesburg and the first woman hotel in this city! Lindi uses her talents to advise GPA regarding grants in the country and mentor grantees receiving GPA funds.

Administration:
We could not begin to make this type of impact without our dedicated funders and sound financial management. Most notably, 100% of every dollar donated is sent directly to our grantees to fund their programs. Our administrative costs (9%) arefunded by our board. All current and past financial statements and tax statements are always listed on our website: Please also note, that during our 2012 annual meeting the board elected to change our fiscal year to conform to a calendar year. Hence, for 2011-12 you will find statements for our October 1, 2011-September 30, 2012 year and our “stub” year of October 1, 2012-December 31, 2012.
