Steven’s story: Volunteering with Actionnaires video transcript

My name’s Steven. I’m 19 years old, I’m a student and I’m a volunteer at Actionnaires.Actionnaires is a club for visually impaired and blind children and it’s run by Action for Blind People.

Kids can come and be involved in sport or extracurricular activities, and it’s just great fun for the kids and they really get a lot out of it.

‘We’re going to be winners!’

I’m a registered blind person. I came to Actionnaires when I was ten, as a child. The positive thing about Actionnaires is that it helps you grow and you grow through the club, with the people that you start off with. You grow relationships, friendships that last for a long time.

‘Good lad! You nearly got it straight…’

Today at Huddersfield Actionnaires, we’ll be doing archery – the first time in a while, I think, that we’ve been involved in archery, so it should be a good session.

I think my position as a volunteer is quite vital, really, to help the kids, be a role model to them. I get a lot out of seeing people grow and develop and seeing their personality come alive.

Actionnaires is bigger than sport – it’s a community.

If anybody was ever thinking about volunteering for us, it’s a fantastic opportunity – it is. It’s one of those things that you’ll be proud of once you’ve volunteered for it – you will.

There are hundreds of opportunities across the UK with RNIB,Action for Blind People and Cardiff Institute for the Blind. Whatever skills you may have, you can put it to a positive use and help to change people’s lives.
