COURSE DESCRIPTION
Elastic deformations and stresses in structural elements causes by axial force, bending moment, shear force, and torsion; stress-strain relationships; principal stresses and Mohr’s circle; and elementary design concepts. Emphasis is placed on the importance of satisfying equilibrium, compatibility of deformation, and material behavior requirements. Successful
ABET COURSE OUTCOMES
The following Civil Engineering program outcomes will be demonstrated in studying the topics in CE 242: (i) an ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science, and engineering; (ii) an ability to identify, formulate, and solve engineering problems; (iii) an ability to use the techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools necessary for engineering practice;and
(iv)contribution to development of proficiency in field of structural engineering which is one of four recognized major fields in Civil Engineering curriculum. For complete list of departmental objectives and outcome, please visit Civil Engineering Department web page at
TEXT
R. C. Hibbeler, Mechanics of Materials, 6th ed. (2005), Prentice Hall.
CLASS CONDUCT
1.Lectures
2. Homework assignments collected in the beginning of each lecture.
(Please see the required homework format below.)
3.Three 50-minute exams.
4. A comprehensive final exam.
GRADING
- Homework = 15%
- Exams = 3 @ 20% = 60%
- Final exam = 25%
Final course grade is assigned as below. Class participation will be implicitly rewarded for students whose grades just fall below the given limits.
90%-100% = A, 80%-89% = B, 70%-79% = C
60%-69% = D, and below 59% = E
NOTES
1. The student cannot pass this course solely because of a good homework grade. He/She also has to have a passing average on the exams.
2. A grade of "I" is given only for extenuating circumstances such as illness. At the time a grade "I" is requested and approved, a procedure for completing the course work will be agreed upon.
3. Make-up exams will not be given for any mid-term exams. However, missing it for an acceptable reason (e.g., illness) will not result in a penalty in grading. Absence without a valid reason will result in a score of zero.
4. A “WR” grade (Withdrawal by Registrar) may be given if a student misses more than nine lectures without permission from the instructor.
REQUIRED HOMEWORK FORMAT
1.Use one side of 8.5 " x 11 " paper (engineering paper is preferred).
2.Student’s name, assignment number, and due date should be shown on the cover page while problem number and page number should be given on each page.
3.For each problem, clearly state the following items:
Given:(in your own concise sentences)
Find:(in your own concise sentences)
Solution:
(show all your work, step by step, and when appropriate, briefly discuss your results)
4.Figures and sketches should be drawn NEATLY (and to the scale when possible).
5.Answers should be underlines or boxed and proper units and signs should be shown.
6.NO LATE HOMEWORK WILL BE ACCEPTED. Prior permission is required for late assignments.
7. Have fun.
All requests or questions which you may have for the instructor that will require taking some action at a later time should be communicated in a written memo. The rationale is to give you practice in writing effective memos which is a necessity for a successful professional engineer. It also provides a written prompt for your instructor's memory.
