The Viola Walker Scholarship

Background

The scholarship is to be awarded annually to a graduating senior at the Detroit International Academy for Young Women. It is to be applied toward the recipient’s tuition at an institution of higher learning or an accredited vocational, apprenticeship or training program.

Amount

The scholarship is for $500 that will be distributed in a $250 increment for each school term and will be issued directly to the educational institution. This scholarship is not renewable.

Qualifications and Requirements

Be a graduating senior of the Detroit International Academy for Young Women with a minimum cumulative 3.0 grade point average during high school.

Complete the enclosed application.

Provide proof of your cumulative high school grade point average (i.e., current official transcript).

Provide proof of acceptance to an accredited institution of higher learning or an accredited vocational, apprenticeship or trade program. Such proof can be a letter of acceptance. You must enroll either for no less than nine credit hours or no less than half time.

Provide a reference letter from one of your past or present teachers at the Academy.

Prepare an essay on the subject and entitled, “The Most Difficult Experience I Have Ever Had and What I Learned From It.” The essay shall be no more than 250 words, double-spaced and preferably typewritten.

If a parent, provide a statement from each of your child’s/children’s child-care provider(s) attesting to the fact that the minor(s) are appropriately cared for by you and giving the name and phone number of each provider. A child-care provider may be a nursery, day school, babysitter or relative.

Schedule

Application forms are currently available through the Academy or online at metroumc.org. The application and other required data are due or must be postmarked no later than April 16. The scholarship winner will be notified by May 20.
