JUNIOR SELECTION

2003

INTRODUCTION

This document outlines the pathways for athletes who wish to compete in the Junior World Championships 2003 (Athens), the Coupe de la Jeunesse 2003 (Hazewinkel, Belgium), and the Home Countries International 2003 (Inniscarra).

GOALS

The goals of the Irish Junior Programme are to promote excellence in rowing, to retain athletes to progress to Under 23/Senior levels, and to emphasize a balanced lifestyle.

These Information Camps are intended to introduce athletes and coaches who wish to be involved in either the Junior Worlds, the “Coupe”, and the Junior events in the Home Countries International in 2003 and beyond to the process of selection. The focus of the camps will be to educate potential rowers and their coaches to the systems and level of training involved. Athletes and coaches need only attend one OR the other of these camps.

HOW TO:

Be invited to the camps in either Inniscarra (Feb. 23rd) or Enniskillen (Mar. 2nd)

  • Send a camp nomination form to the IARU office by February 17th.
  • Be born in 1985 or later AND attain the following erg scores:
  • 5k Erg scores Males 18:10 or betterFemales 21:40 or better

Be invited to the Selection Trials in Inniscarra (April 17th-20th)

  • Send a National Junior Team nomination form to the IARU office by April 1st.
  • Be born in 1985 or later, AND attain at least one of the following:
  • 5k Erg scoresMales17:30 or betterFemales 19:50 or better
  • Place 1st or 2ndin a 1x or 2- in any of the following events:

-St. Michael’s Head

-Time Trial Inniscarra (February 8th)

-Cork Head (February 22nd)

-Galway Head (March 15th)

  • Convenors’ discretion

Coxswains (Note - It is unlikely that coxswains will be needed for the Junior World Championships, however we will need them for the “Coupe”(male only) and the Home Internationals).

  • Send a National Junior Team nomination form to the IARU office by April 1st.
  • Be born in 1985 or later, AND:
  • Males must weigh 57kg or less, females must weigh 52kg or less
  • Coxswains nominations must be accompanied by a letter of recommendation from their coach.

Coaches

  • Send a Coaches’ Nomination Form to the IARU office by April 1st.
  • Must support the direction and ideals of the programme
  • Must have a demonstrated ability to develop athletes.

JUNIOR WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS – Athens (August 4th-9th)

The Junior World Championships represent a very high level of rowing. As the Athens Olympic course is the venue, it is the goal of the IARU to send at least one crew to the championships this year.

GOLD MEDAL STANDARDS (GMS)

The following are the time standards used by the Junior Convenors to evaluate the crews aiming for the Junior World Rowing Championships. Coaches, athletes and crews aiming for the Junior World Championships must realise the demanding times necessary for success at this level:

All selected crews that attain a time equal to or better than 95% of the GMS listed above over 2000m on Inniscarra during the May 10th and 11th Time Trial weekend will be sent to the Junior Worlds. In the event of no crews attaining this standard, the one crew that comes the closest will be sent on the recommendation of the International Rowing Committee.

La Coupe de la Jeunesse – Hazewinkel, Belgium (August 2nd -3rd)

All selected crews that attain a time equal to or better than 92.5% of the GMS listed above over 2000m on Inniscarra during the May 10th and 11th Time Trial weekend will be sent to the Coupe de la Jeunesse. In the event of no crews attaining this standard, one or more crews may be sent on the recommendation of the International Rowing Committee.

Home International Regatta - Inniscarra (July 26th)

As a result of the Selection Trials in Inniscarra (April 17th-20th), submitted 5k and 2k ergometer scores, and the performance of rowers and scullers in small boats at Queens, Portora, Cork, Limerick, Dublin Metropolitan and Athlone regattas, a group will be invited to trials on 28th June 2003 to select the crews for the Home International.
