TITLE: QUALITY ANALYSIS USING GIS

Many people take clean water for granted and are hardly aware of what it takes to guarantee a water supply from pollutants.The uncertainty associated with the availability surface water, both in terms of quantity and quality made people to depend on ground water.But in recent year’s depletion of water table and chemicals like fluoride and arsenic are causes of concern. So we took up study of ground water quality parameters in our study area which has both agricultural area as well as residential area, where people mainly rely on ground water. 17 bore wells are selected as observation wells for our study in the area.

The project mainly comprises of locating of bore well points using GPS, and transferring them to toposheets using GIS.

Water samples are collected periodically and water quality analysis is performed in the laboratory. The water quality parameter contours maps are prepared using ARC-GIS. The water samples collected from each of the bore wells were tested for total hardness, fluoride, alkalineand chloride and their contours are prepared and analyzed for before and after monsoon periods.

The results indicate that the ground water in the study area vary and their chemical parameter values. Hardness is very high in all the bore wells above 300mg/L in all of them, but very few exceed upper limit of 600mg/L. Fluoride content is a major cause of concern,

Exceeding the upper limit in nearly 50% of the samples tested. Except these 2 parameters other parameters are not of much concern and are well within the permissible limits. We hope the study will help the farmers and the domestic water users of the area.
