Anti-Defamation League – International Jewish non-governmental organization based in the United States to stop the defamation of Jewish people and fight anti-semitism
Feed the Children – Founded and centered in Oklahoma, this is a relief organization that delivers good, medicine, clothing, and other necessities to people who lack the essentials due to famine, war, poverty, or natural disaster
Human Rights Campaign – The largest LGBT civil rights advocacy group in the US, this group works for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender equal rights
NAACP – Founded in 1909, this group’s purpose is to ensure the political, educational, social, and economic equality of rights of all people and to end racial hatred and discrimination
National Immigration Project – This group’s purpose is to promote justice and equal treatment in all areas of immigration
Planned Parenthood – This non-profit organization provides reproductive health services in the United States and internationally
UNICEF – This is a program run by the United Nations to provide long-term assistance mothers and children in developing countries
Medical/Health Related
Alcoholics/Narcotics Anonymous – Alcoholics Anonymous provides supports for those recovering from addiction to alcohol. Narcotics Anonymous is an off-shoot program for people who are experiencing or have experienced dependence on other drugs
Autism Speaks – This group sponsors autism research and conducts outreach activities to raise awareness for the government, families, and the general public.
JDRF – This charity organization is dedicated to raising awareness and money for Type 1 Diabetes research
National Alliance on Mental Illness – This group represents families and people affected by mental illness in the United States and provides support, education, and research through various public awareness activities
National Eating Disorders Association – This non-profit organization is devoted to preventing, treating, and increasing education about eating disorders, weight, and body image. Specifically, their STAR program (Solutions Through Advocacy and Reform) focuses on legislative changes.
Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation – Because there is not much information out there about this disease, this group is focused on raising awareness, providing education, and funding research about pulmonary fibrosis.
Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation –Currently referred to as simply “Komen,” this is the most widely known, largest, and best-funded non-profit breast cancer organization in the US.
To Write Love on Her Arms – This non-profit organization aims to provide hope for people struggling with addiction, depression, self-injury, and thoughts of suicide. They connect those struggling with treatment programs, websites, support groups, and other resources.
Animal Rights
Humane Society of the United States – This non-profit organization strives to resolve animal welfare problems, currently focusing on factory farming, animal fighting, the fur trade, puppy mills, and wildlife abuse
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals– PETA is based out of Virginia and focuses on supporting animals in all ways. Their slogan is “Animals are not ours to eat, wear, experiment on, use for entertainment, or abuse in any other way.”
SPCA – This is a general name for the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. There is an ASPCA for America. This non-profit organization is dedication to preventing cruelty to animals.
Nature / Earth Preservation
African Wildlife Foundation – This is an international conservation organization that creates strategies and programs to protect the wildlife and lands of Africa
Greenpeace – This is an international activist group that uses direct actions such as lobbying to achieve its goals of helping the Earth’s environment. Specific issues they focus on include climate change, deforestation, overfishing, and commercial whaling.
National Audubon Society – This non-profit organization is dedicated to conserving birds, and other wildlife and ecosystems in the environment.
National Wildlife Federation – This is the largest private, non-profit conservation group that strives to protect American wildlife through education and research.
Rainforest Alliance – This organization’s goal is to ensure biodiversity and livelihood of environments through changing business and consumer practices and behaviors.
World Wide Fund for Nature –This international non-profit organization works to reduce humanity’s footprint on the environment and conserve wildlife.
