Required Personal Protective Equipment: CSA approved steel-toed footwear, CSA approved safety glasses or goggles, 100 % cotton coveralls preferred, hearing protection as per RETSD policy, and leather gloves may be appropriate to protect hands.
GENERAL NOTES: No lighters, matches or cell phones are allowed in the shop area. Long necklaces, bracelets and rings should be removed. Long hair should be tied back. Strings and hoods hanging from pullovers/sweaters should be removed or tucked inside of coveralls.
Job Safety Analysis:
Step / Description / Hazard / Controls1 / Inspect work area. Be conscious of hazards such as clutter, spills flammable materials or sources of ignition i.e. incandescent lamps/welding, grinding or cutting equipment. / Trip, fall, slip Fire, explosion / Remove clutter and clean up spills. Remove flammables and sources of ignition. Note location of fire extinguishers and fire blankets.
2 / Ensure that vehicle is safely supported before beginning operation. / Crushing injury or death can occur if vehicle falls from supports. / Refer to JHA re: jacking/hoisting and blocking vehicles. If you are unsure if the vehicle has been supported properly ask your supervisor/teacher. Ensure that vehicle is safely supported - do shake test of vehicle before going underneath to start work.
3 / Coil, leaf and torsion springs store large amounts of energy. Pay attention and proceed with caution. / Rapid release of energy can cause injury and or death. / Read and follow specific service procedure as outlined by the vehicle manufacturer.
4 / Prior to starting, inspect ball joint installation tool for damage or fault. Check condition of threads and collars. Lubricate threads before use. / Faulty and or damaged tools can cause injury, cuts to hands/fingers. Puncture wounds to skin. / Maintain and use tools properly - inform supervisor/teacher of damaged tool/s. Inform others so that they do not use tool/s.
5 / Locate ball joint to be installed and setup tool with proper adapters or collars. Tighten press using a hand wrench. / Press can slip causing pinching or hand injury. Power tools can cause press to fail. / Ensure that ball joint and press are lined up and setup properly before applying any force. Never use power tools with a press.
6 / Clean areas remove any waste Clean and inspect before returning tools to proper storage area. / Trip, fall, slip / Practice good housekeeping removing all clutter will ensure fewer trips and falls. Care and maintain tools remember if tools are damaged do not return to storage area give to supervisor/teacher so that they will remove them from the shop area.
