PURPOSE:
The purpose of the expectation task list is to identify and clarify what management expects from the incumbent. The following expectations and tasks will be part of the annual performance appraisals; your merit increase will be based on the level of performance in each of the following areas.
Expectations may change year to year and both parties should use the annual performance appraisal to determine realistic and equitable goals and outcomes for the upcoming performance year.

KettleWorker(BellRinger)Expectations:
Thefollowingareexpectationsofappropriatebehaviour,appearanceanddresswhileworkingata kettle.
Aboveall,kettleworkers(bellringers),whethervolunteerorpaid,shouldconsiderthemselves representativesofTheSalvationArmyinCanada.
Demeanour/Behaviour while on duty:
•Befriendly,respectfulandpolitetoalldonorsandpassersby.
•Smile,makeeyecontact,andtrytomakea connectionwithasmanypotentialdonorsas possible.
•Bepunctualandcommittedtoworkingduringeachassignedshift.
•Noteat,read,smokeorusemobilephoneswhileoverseeinga kettle.
•Ifpossible,standwhileon duty.
•Avoidobstructingtheflowoftrafficatanykettlelocation.
•Complywithrequestsfromstoremanagersandowners–forexample,movinglocations,not ringingthebell,etc.TheSalvationArmyreliesonthesupportofretailpartnerstoensurethe continuedsuccessoftheChristmasKettleCampaign.Atnopointshoulda kettleworker(bell ringer)challengea retailpartner’sdirectionsaboutthelocationoractivityatthekettles.If issuesarise,thekettleworker(bellringer)shouldimmediatelycontacttheirsupervisor.
•Refrainfromspeakingtomediawithoutreceivingpriorapprovalfromtheirsupervisoror administrator.Ifapproachedbyareporter,respondwith,“I’msorry.I’mnotthebestpersonto respondtoyourquestions.I’llbesuretolettheappropriatepersonknowwhenI’mdonewithmy shift,”orsimilar.
•Neverleavea kettleunattended–foranylengthoftime.
•Ringtheprovidedkettlebellwhileonduty,unlessspecificallyrequestedtostopbyretail partnersorothersinauthority.
AppearanceandDress:
•Beclean,presentableanddressedina mannerconsistentwithSalvationArmyvaluesand standards.
•IfauniformedSalvationist,weartheuniformaccordingtoestablishedstandards.
•Ifnota uniformedSalvationist,wearthevestorotherapparelprovidedbytheirsupervisorfor thedurationoftheirshift.
•Maintainappropriateandprofessionalhairstyles.
•Bepreparedforadverseweatherconditionsifworkingoutdoors.
•Referanyquestionsaboutappropriatedresstoasupervisor.
Dealingwithdonors:
•Usecommonsenseaboutconductingappropriateconversationsorengagingwithdonorsand passersby.Workingatakettleisnotanopportunitytoairpersonalopinionsorgrievances.Itis importanttorememberthatkettleworkers(bellringers)arerepresentingTheSalvationArmy.
•Aftersomeonemakesadonation,respondonlywith“Thankyou”and/or“GodBless”and/or “MerryChristmas.”Kettleworkers(bellringers)maypolitelyofferdonorsanyhandoutsthat havebeenpreviouslyapprovedfordistribution.
•Ifadonoraskshowtheirmoneywillbeused,respondwiththefollowingsuggestedresponse: “Allmoneyraisedinthekettleswillbeusedforsocialserviceprogramsinthelocalcommunity,” orsimilar.
•Ifadonorrequestsareceipt,kindlystatethatreceiptsarenotavailableatthekettlebutwillbe mailedtothedonor.Thekettleworker(bellringer)shouldprovidethedonorwithaslipof paper andaskthemtowritedowntheirname,addressandamountdonated.If thedonationis cash,thekettleworker(bellringer)shouldconfirmtheamountontheslipofpaper.Theslipof papershouldthenbeplacedinthekettle.
•Befamiliarwiththeareawheretheirkettleislocatedsothattheycananswersomecommon questionsthatdonorsorpassersbymayhave.
•IfapasserbyisbelligerentorhasnegativecommentsaboutTheSalvationArmy,donotengage indiscussionordebate.Asuggestedresponseis,“I’msorryyoufeelthatwayandI’llpassalong yourcomplaint.MerryChristmas.”orsimilar.
KettleSafety/Security:
TheSalvationArmytakesthesafetyandsecurityofitskettleworkers(bellringers)anddonations seriously.Therefore,numerousstepsaretakentoensureoverallsecurityoftheprogram:
•Eachkettleshouldbesecurelyfastenedtotheheavyironstandwitha padlockandchain.
•OnlyopenthekettlewhensafelybackonArmypropertyandinthepresenceoftwounrelated individualsdesignatedforthatpurpose.Itis criticalthatatleasttwounrelatedpeoplecontrol andparticipateintheopeningofallkettles,countingandrecordingoffundsdonated.Thisis for theprotectionoftheindividualsinvolved,aswellasmonetarysecurity.
•Wheneverpossible,kettleworkers(bellringers)shouldtransport,pick‐upanddrop‐offkettlesin pairstoensurethesafetyandsecurityofthemselvesandthekettles.
•Storemoneycollectedfromallkettlesinasafeuntilitcanbedeposited.Depositfundsonthe nextbusinessday.
•Whilea kettleworker(bellringer)ison duty,itis theirresponsibilitytooverseedonations, meaningtheyshouldneverleavethekettleunattended.If aworkerneedstoexcusethemselves,theymustco‐ordinatewiththeirsupervisortoensurethatanappropriatepersonisattendingthekettleintheirabsence.
•Kettleworkers(bellringers)aretorefrainfromhandlingcashorotherdonationsinthekettles.
Ifspecificallyrequestedto depositcashintothekettle,workersaretodosoimmediatelyinthe presenceofthedonor.
•Ifakettleworker(bellringer)isapproachedbysomeoneintendingtostealmoneyorotherwise accosted,theyshouldseekasafelocationandcallforhelp
