Rotary Club of Newark (on Trent)

Minutes of the Youth and Vocational Committee

May 6th 2014

Present: Paul Smith, Barrie Ellis, Rita Crowe, Tony Roberts.

In attendance: Denis Power-Needs

Apologies: none.

The meeting was essentially a review of the previous year and a further discussion about the plans for the ensuing year.

Denis was present to present the financial outcome of the Children of Courage Award event. It was agreed that the change of venue worked well, although the event itself could have been a little tighter in its execution. It was agreed that cooperation between the clubs was very good and productive.

Young Musician of the Year. Not as many schools represented, despite Paul's efforts, but a significant increase in competitors from those who did take part.

The Final, held in Barnbygate Methodist Church was very successful and well attended. It was pleasing to see so many Rotarians there from both Southwell and Newark Clubs.

Key Stage 1 Concert. held in Newark Parish Church, stewarded by the club and involving 7 local schools, is getting better year on year. The format this year, devised by Christine Hopkinson was particularly effective and enjoyed by the many parents who came to support. A retiring collection will be shared between the church and the President's charity.

Key Stage 2 Concert. Held at the ECC. It was artistically successful, but the organisation was somewhat lacking. It has already been decided by the organising committee that this year the schools would not be allowed a full rehearsal prior to the concert, as so many parents, and families were left queuing for far too long.

Youth Exchange. This works well with Denis offering support especially with the cross border students who live in our area but go to Grantham Schools.

Young Linguist Award. Rita has heard from the Rotary Club of Barrhead and the committee felt that this was an initiative that we should pursue.

Unfortunately Tony has not as yet had a response from the Rotary Club of Chesterfield Scarsdale regarding the Community Award for Primary Pupils that he would like to pursue next year. Denis has some contacts and has agreed to chase.

The meeting ended with the usual refreshments, so ably provided by Messrs Morrison and Co.
