Fish Trapping Surveys
This template contains data elements that are typically collected when fish trapping is conducted. If you collect data using a rotary screw trap you will need to add a few fields, including start and end times, revolutions/min, and an odometer reading.
All the Excel worksheets containing drop-down list choices (inbold) are currently hidden. To unhide them, go to Format>SheetUnhide, and select whichever Table you wish to view. You must unhide sheets one at a time. You may also wish to add choices to the drop-down options that better fit your particular project. To add a choice, go to the relevant Table; create a new code and definition.
Adding Data Elements
If you collect data elements other than those listed within the template, please feel free to add them and label them as you wish, or delete data elements you do not collect, provided that you retain the minimum core data elements. We ask that you do not change the field names, as this will keep data collected by all entities comparable. Changing field names may also render the Pivot Table reports unusable. If the field name is unclear, you can always change the caption so it makes more sense.
Population Estimates
Excel spreadsheets for calculating population estimates have been created by staff in the Life Cycle Monitoring Program at the Oregon Dept. of Fish and Wildlife. You can access and download spreadsheets and instructions for calculating population estimates from their website:

Minimum Core Data Elements:
Many different data elements could be collected during fish trapping. Since we realize that different groups will have different needs we propose the following list as core minimum data elements. As long as fish are marked each week, and recaptures counted, these data elements will allow for population estimates to made using ODFW’s spreadsheet (see above).
