Olympic Development Program

2009-2010 Year End Report

Michael Strickler, Director of Coaching

Overview

The Olympic Development Program is charged with identifying and training the best players Florida has to offer between the birth years 1993-1997. It is an elite program designed to identify the elite players. To that end a player may be identified through two areas: trials and scouting. US Soccer has a scouting system to identify players outside of our program and place them into our program at the appropriate level of our trial process. Our FYSA staff also was involved in the scouting process and we will continue to expand our program. There was a great amount of cooperation between our staff and US soccer in identifying and evaluating players.

This year was a very successful year in terms of players from our Florida Youth Soccer Association State Teams. The main purpose remained at regional camp was to promote our players the best we could at Region III camp in Alabama so they may be selected to the Region III pools. At our regional camps in July, we had 95 players make the Region III pool for ages 1993-1997 and 54 players in US Soccer National Pools. We still have results pending on 91/92 Girls. Our 94 Girls, 94 Boys and 95 Boys were in the Region III Final. The 94 boys won the Region III ODP Championship.

Trial Process

This year we selected the players at two different periods of the year. The 1996 and 1997

players both boys and girls in Regions A,B,C and D were selected in October and November. The players that were selected in these age groups were offered the opportunity to come to training centers once a month during the months of November and December to train. Both the players who were selected at these fall trials and the players who were not selected were invited to these centers. The 1996 and 1997 players were brought into supercenters in January for additional training and selections.

The 1993 through 1995 boys and girls where brought into trials in March.

The boy’s and girl’s state trials were held at Lake Myrtle Park in April. Our philosophy is to build a broad base at the younger age group and to narrow down the number of teams as they get to the older levels. To this end we made a selection of four teams for the 1997 boys teams, three teams for the 1996 boys, 96 girls and 97 girls, two teams for the 94 girls, 95 girls and 95 boys, a pool for the 93 girls, and one team in each of the 93 and 94 age groups.

Team training and Developmental Camp

The teams in the 1993-1997 boys and girls were brought into training in June to prepare the teams for the Region III Camp.

In the 97 age groups the approach was different for the year. Players who were identified were invited to attend either the Region III Camp or a Developmental Camp. The Region III Camp was held in Alabama and the FYSA Developmental Camp was held in Deland for the girls and Vero Beach for the boys. For the first year we also invited based on clubs DOC recommendations players born a year earlier 1998. Over 260 players in these age groups attended either the Region III Camp or the FYSA Developmental Camp.

The age groups played games and trained over the course of a 5 day camp.
