Comparable Data Fields, Federal Archeology Report (also known as the Secretary’s Report to Congress) 1985-2012

The NPS Archeology Program compared the numerical data about Federal archeological activities that Federal agencies have provided using different versions of the Federal Archeology Program annual questionnaire. The purpose of this comparison to identify information that is consistently provided each fiscal year. Comparable data facilitates a more accurate comprehension of trends in the Federal Archeology Program over the 28 years of data collection.

Results of the comparisons are presented in this table. The table correlates questions in other questionnaires to similar questions in the 1998-2006 questionnaire. The comparison did not include questions in other versions of the questionnaire that were not also in the 1998-2006 questionnaire. Several topics that were included in other versions were not included in the 1998-2006 revision and, thus, were not considered in this comparison.

In the following table, the column headings refer to questions in the 1998-2006 questionnaire, which was used to standardize the data. The headings contain the question number and a brief description of the data solicited for each question. The first column in each row lists the fiscal years in which each question was used. The rows contain the identifying number of the comparable question in a particular questionnaire.

Empty cells for fiscal years prior to 1998 indicate that the referenced information was first solicited in 1998; and that comparable data was not collected during any particular year. Users should note that similar, but not identical, information may have been solicited in other questionnaires. For example, some of the data about the protection of archeological resources from earlier questionnaires are similar, but not directly comparable, to the 1998-2006 data.

In several instances, data solicited by single questions in the 1998-2006 questionnaire are comparable to multiple questions in other questionnaires. This is indicated by the addition or multiplication of question numbers within the columns.

This comparison is the basis for the data provided in the tables “Comparable Data 1985-2012, by Year” and “Comparable Data 1985-2012, by Agency.” People interested in data collected in years other than 1998-2006, but that are not included in the cumulative data tables should consult the reports for individual years.
