LAS VEGAS --It's the season of giving, which is why many organizations around the valley are doing what they can to make sure kids in need aren't forgotten during the holidays.
The line outside of HELP of Southern Nevada was out the door Friday, and it was filled with people hoping to get toys for their loved ones.
"It's a wonderful time of celebration and if you keep the true meaning of Christmas it can't be anything but great,” said Jessica Nelson, getting helped with toys for the holidays.
Nelson is one who depends on the assistance of HELP. She said it's hard to juggle bills while trying to buy presents for her two kids, so she spent part of her day along with hundreds of other people at HELP.
"For them to be able to unwrap a present it's kind of a reminder of what Christmas really is," Nelson said.
However, Organizations like HELP said they have had to toughen up on their screening process, so they won't get scammed.
Workers with the organization said they work hard to help those in need, but they said they also have to watch out for people trying to take advantage of charity.
“You'd be amazed how many people say they have all of these kids, so we require proof,” said Mindy Torres, HELP of Southern Nevada.
"It's not fair that you go from one agency to another when there's other people who are truly in need too,” said Mindy Torres, HELP of Southern Nevada.
Organizers say as they unload toys they'll asks for documentation such as birth certificates, social security cards, IDs for the parents and even a power bill. They said they just need something to show they're truly in need.
Charlene Barnett said she's willing to go through the screening process to make sure her kids have a good holiday.
"It'll be a better Christmas for them. You know they will be happy with what they get. My kids are very grateful,” Barnett said.
HELP of Southern Nevada leaders said they're looking for more donations.
