COURSE OUTLINE
This course has been specifically designed and presented by REHIS to address specific issues of reporting specialist cases to the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service (COPFS) in Scotland for consideration for prosecution on indictment. In addition, participants will have the opportunity to consider their own role as professional witness and experience giving evidence in chief in a mock scenario.
The course will be offered to Environmental Health Officers (EHOs) who have experience of investigating serious workplace incidents and accidents and the submission of cases to the Procurator Fiscal.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
You will:
learn about the management of an incident particularly in relation to working in partnership with other organisations with parallel or primary responsibilities
learn how to identify the relevant crime particularly in relation to statutory crime
learn how to identify the correct accused – particularly in relation to Corporate Bodies
consider investigative techniques, understand the difference between precognition and statements, discuss pursuing relevant lines of enquiry, evidence gathering and good management of productions - including seizing and handling productions
understand the requirements of ‘Disclosure’ and ‘Revelation’ as related to solemn cases
learn about the responsibilities of being a professional witness
you will have an opportunity to experience giving “evidence in chief” in relation to a mock scenario.
COURSE DELIVERY
Participants in this REHIS course will benefit from the experience of Mrs Betty Bott. Formerly a Senior Procurator Fiscal, Mrs Bott worked for over 30 years in the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service. She was later the Director of Legal & Professional Development at the LawSchool of the University of Dundee and has over 20 years’ experience teaching this subject to non-legal professionals.

The course will be held at the Municipal Buildings, West Bridge Street, Falkirk FK1 5RS. Further details of the venue and how to find it will be sent out with the confirmation of your booking.
COURSE FEES ANDREGISTRATION
The fee for the course will be £315.00 for REHIS members and £350.00for non-members. Please note that lunch is not provided, however delegates are encouraged to use the catering facilities on site. Tea and coffee will be served during the morning and afternoon session.
This advanced course is aimed at those with experience of preparing cases for prosecution. Delegates should have already attended the REHIS Law Enforcement Course or have other relevant experience in a lead role of crime investigation and reporting.
Please note: This course is a one day course which will be offered on both the 28 and 29 of August 2014. Places are limited to SIX each day so early booking is advised to secure a place. Places will be allocated on a first come basis.
