The social networking website Facebookwas launched on February 4, 2004 by a Harvard University student named Mark Zuckerberg. The membership of Facebook was expandedto include first students from certain American universities, then students from colleges and universities across the globe, and finally, anyone thirteen years or older. The sitehas more than 60 million active users, with over 2 million Canadian users. Userscreate profiles containing educational background, personal and professional information, and photographs. Theycan join groups of friends and exchange both private and public messages. The site’sname refers to the paper facebooks containing photographs of members of the campus community that some colleges and universities give to incoming students as a way to get to know other people on campus. Facebook is the number one site for photos in the United States with over 60 million photos uploaded weekly. One interesting phenomenonis the use of Facebook to mourn for and memorialize a deceased individual. Memorial pageshave been created for murder victims, including a 14-year-old girl stabbed in January, 2008, and an 18-year-old girl shot at Montreal’s Dawson College in September 2006. These sitesallow people to share their memories of the deceased, to express their anger at the victim’s death, and to comfort one another.
