Advanced Clinical Radiography Decision-making Workbook
An Advanced Clinical Radiography Decision-making Workbook / Beginning year 2, students will maintain an Advanced Clinical Radiography Decision-making Workbookfor the following examinations:
  1. Paediatrics,
  2. Multiple Trauma,
  3. Skull;
  4. Digital Fluoroscopy
  5. Bone Mineral Density (DXA),
  6. Mammography.
The paediatric, multiple trauma, skull and digital fluoroscopy component of the Workbook MUST be completed by Year 4.
Completion of the DXA and Mammography components is optional.
This is a course requirement which begins in Year Two with a third to be completed annually

2017 Year 3 Clinical Studies requirements: Semester 1

Dates: RAD3051, February 27th - March 24th (4 weeks)

GENERAL RADIOGRAPHY
(2 weeks)
Students construct their own Learning Contract.
There must be evidence students have reviewed their 1st and 2nd Year Clinical Workbooks and clearly identified general radiographic examinations for which further experience is necessary. / Over five weeks a minimum of five (5) examination entries of non-routine cases related to the general radiographic examinations identified in the contract
There must be evidence that the student has examined a range of patients in particular, those presenting a challenge in terms of either their clinical history or physical condition.
At least one case MUST involve either an aggressive, demented or patient from the psychiatric ward/
Maintenance of
  1. A General Radiography Register
  2. Advanced Clinical Radiography Decision Making Workbook (Theatre, DSA etc)
  3. An Image Collectiontwo images with Discussion
/ Category 1. One examination from the list
  1. Cervical spine (a separate C1 – C2 projection; AP 3-7; a lateral C1 –C7, ideally both oblique projections and, if necessary a cervico - thoracic junction)
  2. Thoracic spine (AP; lateral & ideally a coned view for cervico-thoracic junction or thoraco-lumbar junction)
  3. Lumbar spine (AP; coned AP L5/S1; lateral; coned lateral L5/S1 and ideally both oblique projections)
  4. Shoulder girdle (A minimum of 3 projections for a defined pathology e.g. frozen shoulder; rotator cuff; evaluation for recurrent dislocation)
  5. Pelvis and hip to include a horizontal beam lateral
AND ONE from Category 2 below:
1.An acute abdomen
2.A mobile chest on a patient in ICU OR a mobile orthopaedic examination

For all examinations student is to assume the role of the radiographer & exhibit the characteristics of a Competent Student Radiographer

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT CONTRACT / 1. A 1000 word Evidence Based Practice (EBP) review of a clinical case for which CT was used as a diagnostic tool
2. A 1000 word EBP review of a clinical case for which CT was used as a prognostic tool.
3. Completion of a self-assessment exercise with Supervisor feedback
AND EITHER 4 OR 5
4. Task One Demonstrated capacity to set a trolley for a contrast procedure and exhibit appropriate levels of sterility etc. OR
5. Task Two Demonstrated capacity to gown & glove in the case of an infectious patient e.g. MRSA/VRE patient & assume role of the radiographer during such an examination
Both can be completed in Semester Two if rostering to a hospital does not occur until Sem 2.

GENERAL RADIOGRAPHY
Students construct their own Learning Contract.

Over four weeks five examination entries of non-routine cases related to the general radiographic examinations identified in the contract
There must be evidence that the student has examined a range of patients in particular, those presenting a challenge in terms of either their clinical history or physical condition
An Image Collection two images with Discussion in a case study format (graded)
Maintenance of following requirements:
  1. A General Radiography Register
  2. Advanced Clinical Radiography Decision Making Workbook (Theatre, DSA etc.)
/ The clinical assessment will be completed towards the end of the placement following at least 3 continuous weeks in general radiography.
Students must ask their designated supervisor to assess their general radiographic abilities across a range of typical examinations that present over a concentrated period of 3 hours either morning or afternoon during the working week.
The supervisor must list the examinations he or she observed and write them down within the assessment proforma. There must be at least 6 radiographic examinations.
The patients themselves must be from a range of cultural backgrounds, ages and present with a range of clinical conditions. NB A fracture clinic may be acceptable provided it comprises more than simple fractures to the wrist etc.
The assessor must complete the proforma based upon their observations across the range of examinations they have observed the student perform. / For all examinations student is to assume the role of the radiographer exhibit the characteristics of a Competent Student Radiographer
This assessment MUST be conducted under Competency Based Assessment conditions
MEDICAL ULTRASOUND
CONTRACT
(2 – 3 days) / Observation time ONLY with reflective task (case study)
No detailed reports / No clinical assessment.
Students will have their ultrasound scanning abilities reviewed on campus. / Not applicable
PROFESSIONALDEVELOPMENT
CONTRACT / 1. Completion of a 1,000 word IPE/L investigative task based on the health care team involved treating a patient with poor co morbidity.
2. Completion of a self-assessment exercise with Supervisor feedback
AND EITHER 3 0R 4 (whichever one was not completed in Semester One)
3. Task One Demonstrated capacity to set a trolley for a contrast procedure and exhibit appropriate levels of sterility etc. OR
4. Task Two Demonstrated capacity to gown & glove in the case of an infectious patient e.g. MRSA/VRE patient & assume role of the radiographer during such an examination
Both can be completed in Semester Two if rostering to a hospital does not occur until S2.
ADDITONAL / Students are encouraged if possible to seek out rostered opportunities in other modalities especially CT and DSA to build exposure and experience to these areas
