Course Description

Los Angeles County is one of the largest and most diverse areas in the world. With a population of more than 10 million people throughout its 88 cities, it is the most populous county in the United States (larger than 42 states). With a geographic range of more than 4,500 square miles, Los Angeles County spans a widely diverse geographic area, including the Los Angeles, Rio Hondo, San Gabriel, and Santa Clara rivers. Los Angeles County has an economy larger than that of many countries, including Sweden, Norway, Poland, or Belgium.

Leadership L.A. (LLA) provides both classroom and experiential learning, giving fellows unmatched access to high-level decision makers and deep exposure to complex local issues affecting Los Angeles. LLA fellows build unparalleled relationships – and partnerships – to help them succeed both in their work and in their community engagement. In addition, fellows hone their leadership skills through curriculum designed and delivered by professional development and leadership experts.

Learning Outcomes for Leadership L.A. Fellows

  • Build deeper understanding oftopics and issues that are essential to Los Angeles County’s future, including arts and culture, economic development, education, healthcare, local government, natural resources, transportation and more.
  • Gain critical skills to be more effective leaders in challenging situations; explore personal leadership development, including internal dynamics of leadership; complete a customized 360 leadership style assessment; and create a leadership development plan.
  • Identify opportunities to become personally involved in building a stronger Los Angeles through civic and community engagement.
  • Expand personal and professional network by working in teams and as a class, as well as engaging with more than 60 local and regional leaders from business, nonprofits, government, higher education and philanthropy.

Instructional Process

This fellowship meets in person once per month for nine months, in both classroom style environments and excursions to places of interest. Between seminars, fellows meet with their assigned Quad Teams to discuss the 10 categories of the Leadership Portfolio.

Course Materials

SCLN will provide course materials on an on-going basis. No additional textbooks or materials are required.
