HOBSONSBAY INTERNATIONAL FRIENDSHIP ASSOCIATION

INFORMATION SHEET FOR STUDENTS

In October 1988, the City of Altona formalised a sister city agreement with the City of Anjo, Japan and signed a further agreement under the City of Hobsons Bay after the amalgamation of the former Cities of Altona and Williamstown. The common objective of the two cities is to develop friendship and goodwill and, through the sharing of information, promote a deeper understanding between the nations of Australia and Japan.

As a result of the first signing of the sister city agreement with the City of Anjo, the Altona International Friendship Association was formed and then the name changed to the Hobsons Bay International Friendship Association when the second agreement was signed. To date one of the main functions of the Association is the Student Exchange Program which provides the opportunity for students in HobsonsBay to experience at first hand, the culture and lifestyle of countries other than Australia. The Association also conducts a Cultural Exchange Program where a piece of art is donated to Anjo from various artists within HobsonsBay and likewise from Anjo every three years. A citizen delegation also visits HobsonsBay every three years where members of the Association offer homestay accommodation.

Four students and a chaperon are chosen each year and the Association prepares the students and chaperon by giving them the opportunity to participate in a Preparation course to prepare a speech and Performance in Japanese . The students applying must be between 14 and 17 years of age and residents of HobsonsBay. The chaperon, however, must work or live in HobsonsBay to be eligible.

The successful applicant will provide homestay for the Japanese student during his/her stay in HobsonsBay from approximately late June – early July. The return visit to Anjo is expected to be late July early August.

The Association has successfully conducted student exchange programs since 1989 enabling our young people to experience at first hand Japanese customs and cultures. While the Japanese students and chaperon are in HobsonsBay for two weeks, the Association prepares their itinerary and it is expected that our students and chaperon will participate in all Hobsons Bay International Friendship Association arranged and privately arranged activities together with their families.
