Aims & Objectives
  • To highlight the role of new technologies in abusive relationships
  • Look at the ways they can be used to control/manipulate young people’s behaviour
  • Look at the ways that new forms of communication and social networking might put young people at risk when leaving a relationship
  • Look at the ways a partner might use new technologies to stalk/harass
  • Look at how to keep themselves safe online
  • Sexting- why people do it, the risks

Introduction
  • Highlight self-care, confidentiality and ground rules
  • Introduce the topic; state that first you are going to look at how the young people themselves use their various technologies. Then you will go on to examine how new technologies might provide an opportunity for partners to control and manipulate young people.

Activity 1
Watch exposed DVD (RESOURCE NEEDED).
Discuss with group why YOUNG PERSON might take these images, the impact these images could have on the YOUNG PERSON, their family, future employers the boyfriend/girlfriend and the legal side of it.
Discuss with group what celebrities publish selfies online and typically what kind of images these might be and the impact it has on their public image.
On flipchart paper look under the heading WHY? Why you or someone might share a selfie?
Under the heading RISKS write what risks you take when taking/sharing a selfie. Now think about selfies that are more risky than others and write up a list under RISKY SELFIES. Discuss and write IMPACT on young person of sending selfies and WHERE TO GO FOR SUPPORT…..
Get them to think about the how these videos might be used as a way of controlling or blackmailing them. How might knowing someone has personal images of you make you more easily controlled? Talk through what to do if a young person is worried about pictures/images a partner has of them.

Discuss how to keep yourself safe online. If young people are willing to let us look at the privacy setting on social media check they have security setting correct.
Activity 4
Show CEOPS website and explain how to report an issue to them. / Evaluation
End session by telling the group what the next session will be and complete the evaluation sheet
