Course Description
This is a third year Korean language course designed for students who have completed up to KOREA 3060 at the Uwith a B- or higher, or the equivalent elsewhere. Students in this class should also be able to carry on conversations in Korean in most day-to-day situations, and/or have upper-intermediate comprehension skills. This course will be conducted mostly in Korean, although English or a mixture of English and Korean will be used in certain situations that require the clear communication of instructions or linguistic points. Also, some activities and assignments will involve translating from Korean into English.
The purpose of this course is to further increase students’ability in speaking, reading and writing Korean through a more advanced acquisition of vocabulary, grammar, idioms, and cultural knowledge that will facilitate fluent, appropriate, and culturally nuanced language use. Also, in 3070, students will be introduced to Hanja, Chinese characters used in Korean, to further their knowledge of Korean vocabulary and learn to recognize word roots in new vocabulary they might encounter. Finally, students are prompted to recognize gaps in their acquisition of Korean and choose individual assignments designed to fill these gaps (see Reading / Conversation Reports on p. 3 for more details).
Course Objectives:
- to increasefluency in speaking, comprehending, reading, and writing Korean
- to learn 150 of the most commonly used Hanja
- to learn to recognize and fill individual gaps in Korean language acquisition
- to increase literacy in Korea culture
- to encourage further study of the Korean language and culture
Required Texts
- Integrated Korean Intermediate 2.U of Hawai’i Press, 2013 (bookstore)
- Hanja Textbook (handout in first class)
- There will be many handouts of supplementary material in this class, so please have a proper system for organizing and accessing your materials.
COURSE REQUIREMENTS
Attendance and Participation (AP)10%
Your AP grade is based on your coming to class prepared, your active participation in class activities, your collegiality, and your attendance. You are allowed twounexcused absences. Each unexcused absence beyond this will result in a one-point deduction from your participation grade, up to the total of 10 points for participation. An absence may be excused if supported by documentation, such as a doctor’s note, or cleared with the instructor in advance. Three late arrivals (10 mins. or more) will count as one absence.
For more details, click “Attendance and Participation” on Canvas.See also:
Other Expectations:
KOR 3060 is a 3 credit class; plan to spend 6 to 9 hours outside class in preparation, homework, review, etc.
Cell phones should be turned off during class, and laptops kept off desks unless a class activity requires their use.
Written Quizzes (WQ)15%
WQ 2 will test your knowledge of the course syllabus. The remaining WQs will be on a previous Hanja lesson and/or the vocabulary and grammar for the current lesson in Integrated Korean Intermediate II(IKI2). The content of each WQ is indicated in abbreviated form on the schedule on p. 5. Note that when a quiz includes the IKI2 lesson material, you will need to preview the upcoming lesson to be prepared for the quiz. Your lowest twoWritten Quiz grades will be dropped.
Listening Quizzes (LQ)5%
Listening Quizzes will consist of listening activities based on the previous lessons. You will complete these quizzes outside class directly on Canvas, and you may take each quiz three times up to the deadline. The highest grade will be recorded.
NOTE: A make-up quiz will be allowed only in the case of an excused absence, or if you receive permission in advance from the instructor.
Written Homework (HW)15%
At the beginning of class most Tuesdays you will turn in a written assignment specified beforehand and posted on CANVAS. (Sometimes there will be a portion of the assignment for you to turn in electronically by the same deadline.) Written homework will be graded on a ten-point scale. To receive a perfect grade of 10, homework must be complete, contain no more than a handful of very minor errors, be of high-quality content appropriate to your individual acquisition level, and be neat (handwriting itself will not affect the grade, but scratch-outs, messy paper, etc. will—presentation is important in Korean culture!). One point will be taken off for each day an assignment is late, and the Friday after the due date will be the last day to turn in a late assignment unless you have a documented excuse or you received permission in advance. You may resubmit up to 3 HW assignments for an upgrade. In this case, the original assignment must have a grade of 7 or more, and you must resubmit the assignment within a week of receiving it back from the instructor. HW9 is the first draft of your Final Presentation, and will be due on a Sunday.
Oral Presentations (OP)5%
Oral Presentations areconversations or narratives that you compose, practice, and perform for the class. Special instructions will be provided for each OP beforehand on Canvas, or in class. At the beginning of class, you will submit your script to the instructor. You may use a cue sheet for longer presentations, but you must nonetheless deliver the presentation spoken, not read. If you have severe stage fright, you may arrange a private performance.
- Evaluation will be made according to the following five categories for a maximum of 15 points: CONTENT; ACCURACY; COMMUNICATION; PRONUNCIATION and INTONATION; PREPARATION. Please see the rubric inAppendix Afor details.
- You may have your content checked for errors ahead of time. In fact, you are encouraged to do so in order to avoid memorizing and thus reinforcing incorrect language use.
NOTE: A make-up OP will be allowed only in the case of an excused absence, or if you receive permission in advance from the instructor.
Lesson Tests (LT)29%
There will be 4 Lesson Testsbased on materialsince the last Lesson Test, and a fifth Lesson Test based on all lessons from the semester.
NOTE: A make-up LT or FT will be allowed only in the case of an excused absence, or if you receive permission in advance from the instructor.
Reading and ListeningReports (R/L) 8%+ 8%
Four times during the semester, you will turn in a Reading / Conversation Report (독서 보고 / 대화 보고) based on your chosen selections from the provided Reading List (see Appendix B) and the “Iyagi” conversations on These will be graded like HW.
- For all ReadingReports, you will complete3or more points of reading, depending on your proficiency level, and a report for each unit (children’s story, short story, essay, book chapter, etc.). See Appendix B for further instructions, report format, and point values for reading selections.
- For the Listening Report, you will complete a careful study of at least1“Iyagi” conversations. See Appendix C for specific instructions.
Do not wait until just before the report is due to complete these reading and conversation study tasks. To retain what you learn from them, you should be working on them throughout, and certain class activities and parts of HW assignments will be based on your ongoing individual reading and conversation tasks.
Final Presentation/Performance (FP)5%
Youwill prepare a presentationto be given at the end of the semester. Format, content, and specific instructions will be supplied later in the course.

Appendix B
Instructions for the Reading Report
- If you are reading several units for your report (a unit being a very young children’s story, a short story, an essay, or a chapter of a book), make an individual report for each unit and combine these into one file when submitting your Reading Report.
- If you are reading a longer work for your report, you may write one long report instead of a separate report for each chapter (unit).
- For each reading report, copy the headings under “Format” below and fill out the report as indicated. Don’t forget to include your name and the report number, using the title 독서 보고 1, 독서 보고 2, etc.
- Please submit Reading Reports as Word files.
Format:
- If your report is on a section of a book, please note the total number of pages in the book, and the number of pages you read, as follows: 통합 쪽수 [total pages]: ______내가 읽은 쪽수 [number of pages I read]:______Otherwise, skip to 2 below.
- 제목 [Title of the work and chapter title, if any.]:
- 저자 [Author’s name.]:
- 그림 [Illustrator’s name. Skip this heading if there are no illustrations]:
- 옮긴이 [Translator’s name. Skip this heading if there is no translator.]:
- 새로 배운 단어/문법/표현 [A selection of new words/grammar/expressions you learned; at least 4 per point. E.g., a 3-point Reading Report should contain at least 12 new words/grammar/expressions. Please include any words from the title that are new to you.]:
- 줄거리/내용 요약 [Summarize the content. Use 줄거리 for a story/novel, and 내용 for an essay.]:
- 내 소감 [Write a reaction. Did you like the text? Why or why not? What did it make you think about or feel? What did you find puzzling? How about the illustrations, if any? Etc.]:
Length requirement: Your Summary and Reaction sections (7 and 8 above) combined should contain no less than 100 words per point. So a 3-point Reading Portfolio should contain around 300 words total of summary and reaction combined. These do not need to be distributed evenly among units (you may make some longer than others), but write at least five sentences per summary or reaction.
(Appendix B continued)
Reading List with Point Values
You may read any book in the 외국인을 위한 한국어 읽기reader series (Marriot Library Call Number: PL 914.4.0348 2013; location: Level 2 General Collection). These books contain stories from Korean history, folklore, literature, and essays on cultural topics. Each of these books is worth 5 points, but difficulty levels vary, and are usually indicated in the book, so choose ones that best suit your proficiency level.
The books in the list below are in the juvenile section on the 3rd floor of the Marriot Library. Points are assigned roughly according to word count, not usually according to difficulty. As with the books above, choose ones that best suit your proficiency level.
- Note that some of the 0.5 point books have very little text. (e.g., 나의 엄마simply repeats the word “엄마.”) But these books can still be “read” for their illustrations, cultural context, and other details, which you should comment on in your written response. (For instance, the illustrations in one of the 0.5-point books don’t show anyone’s head. What might be the effect of this?)

Instructions for the Listening Report
To access the “Iyagi” conversations on the Talk to Me in Korean website, go to place your cursor on the “Curriculum” tab, and click on “Iyagi (Intermediate)” near the bottom of the drop-down menu. You may work through the conversations in the order given, or choose from the quick-reference title list given in class. Some conversations are longer than others.
- For each Report, you will compile your notes from Steps 1 to 4 below (bolded parts in the instructions) and make a file of your recording from Step 5.
- For each ListeningReport submission, you will submit the written part of the Report as one Word file, and you will submit your recording as one audio file.
- Be sure to head each Listening Report with the report number, using the title 대화 보고 1, 대화 보고 2, etc., as well as the title of the Iyagi conversation you are studying.
Study instructions:
- Listen to the conversation cold, without looking at the script. Jot down what you think the main ideas are (looking back at this after you’ve completed your study of the conversation will show how much you understood correctly the first time). You may make these notes in English.
- Now read the transcript of the conversation while listening to it again, pausing as necessary. Look up anything that is unfamiliar to you in a dictionary, and write down those unfamiliar parts (words, grammar, expressions, etc.) with their definitions OR write/type the definitions in the margins of the transcript, if you’ve printed it out.
- Read through the text again, noting the places you marked. Jot down the main parts you missed or misunderstood during Step 1 above.
- Listen to the conversation, and shadow (to be explained in class) the lines of one of the speakers. Slow it down if necessary, and if you have the app to do so. Do this again, and shadow the lines of the other speaker. Repeat this process until you feel you’ve understood the conversations completely, and can recreate the gist of the conversation fluently with little or no reference to the text. Jot down how many times you shadowed the conversation to reach a complete level of understanding.
- Record a spoken summary of the conversation. Be sure to include all main points of the conversation. Your spoken summary should be fluent, and your shadowing of the conversation will prepare you for this.Use the plain or formal speech level in your summary. Spoken summaries should be between 2 and 3 minutes long.
NOTE: This process should take 1~3 hours depending on the difficulty of the conversation you choose.
