START-UP GRANTS FOR SELF-FUNDED PART-TIME ADULT EDUCATION IN SECOND-LEVEL SCHOOLS

  1. Applications for grants for the above named scheme are now being sought.
  1. The scheme is governed by section 3 of Circular Letter 46/00.
  1. The grant will amount to €6,500 for each of the 32 selected schools.
  1. The grant is intended for
  • Initial grants for materials and equipment
  • To prepare accommodation
  • To cover administration costs
  • To allow fees to be waived for students who cannot afford them
  • For staff training.
  1. A monitoring committee consisting of representatives of teacher unions, school management and the Department of Education and Science will examine applications and make recommendations to the Minister for Education and Science.Generally, the distribution of the grant among the three types of school will reflect the proportion of each type to the total number of second-level schools. Each school in receipt of the grant, will be required to complete a return outlining how the grant was spent.
  1. This scheme is open to all second-level schools in the Secondary, Community & Comprehensive and Vocational sectors. The scheme will terminate at the end of 2006 when the National Development Plan 2000-2006 has been completed.
