Objective of the Job: Leading the development of the College Group’s HE portfolio through: quality assurance; student engagement; curriculum and programme development; the promotion of scholarship, research, staff development and sharing good practice

Section A • Primary Responsibilities

1College Strategy

All members of staff have an important role to play in achieving the mission, aims and objectives stated in the College Development Plan.

2Quality Matters

All members of staff are responsible for the quality of their own work and for the operation of the relevant parts of the College’s Quality System. This will involve operating the appropriate Quality procedures applicable to the job to ensure that students, customers and clients have their needs and expectations identified and fulfilled.

3Staff Development

It is expected that all members of staff will participate in the College’s Staff Development Programme, aimed at maximising staff potential for the individual’s benefit and in ensuring continual improvement in the quality of services provided by the College.

4 Client Focus

All members of staff are expected to manage and develop their role and responsibilities so as to focus on improving the College services to students and other clients. The individual should represent and market the College at any appropriate opportunity.

5Overall Responsiveness

Working flexibly, efficiently and in full co-operation with other staff to maintain the highest professional standards and to promote and implement the strategy and policies of the Corporation.

6 Health and Safety

All members of staff are responsible for ensuring safety within their working area, for ensuring that risk assessments are carried out and that appropriate actions are taken if problems are identified. All staff are required to assist the College Safety Officer in the implementation of measures to ensure that all health and safety requirements are achieved.

7Risk Management

All members of staff will adopt best practices in the identification, evaluation and cost effective control of risks to ensure, as far as possible, that they are eliminated or reduced to a level that is acceptable to the College.

8Safeguarding

All staff who teach, train or work regularly with children aged up to 18 and vulnerable adults are required to comply fully with legislation and College policies and practices to ensure learners are safeguarded and protected.

Section B • Cross Faculty Management Responsibilities

Initial allocation of functions of which the post holder will have direct responsibility:

Higher Education Quality Assurance

Working with the College Quality Nominee to:

  • Ensure that the College’s existing and developing HE provision and quality assurance systems continue to meet all the requirements of the QAA’s UK Quality Code for Higher Education; and develops innovative and creative responses to meet thesedemands;
  • Ensure that the College’s existing and developing HE provision continues to meet all the requirements of the College’s validating bodies;
  • Support and lead preparations for QAA and HE Reviews;
  • Drive enhancement to the HE student experience, with related impacts onthe College’s results from the National Student Survey and the Destination of Leavers from HESurvey and TEF;
  • Lead the annual monitoring, evaluation and reporting by HE programme teams in line with HEI and College requirements (including the College’s annual HE Self EvaluationDocument);
  • Ensure compliance with quality processes, procedures and regulations within HE AssessmentBoards;
  • Support and Chair Academic Appeals and Academic OffencePanels

Higher Education Strategy

Working with the Director of Finance and Planning to:

  • Support LAMs to ensure the quality and coherence of the HE provision across theCollege;
  • Contribute to the ongoing development of the College’s HE Strategy and plan which is responsive to the needs of local people, employers and the localeconomy;
  • Monitor, evaluate and advise on Learning Area compliance with college HE quality assurance processes, policies, procedures and regulations;
  • Develop, maintain and monitor central information for validation, internaland external quality assurancepurposes;
  • Participate in college committees and working groups related to HEquality assurance, strategy anddevelopment;
  • Advise and support marketing for HE provision in conjunction with the College’s marketing and publicityteam.
  • Represent the College at external HE forums

Higher Education Student Engagement

The role will lead on quality issues related to HE student engagement in quality assurance processes and on the HE student experience.

  • Lead the NECOP programme for the College and deliver the associated action plan.
  • Ensure that the college is complying innovatively and creatively to all aspects of student engagement within the UK Quality Code for HE;
  • Liaise effectively with colleagues, across the college, involved with HE in both academic and support roles, to identify programme and/or college wideissues related to the student experience and develop appropriateresponses;
  • Ensure College targets for the participation of final year students in the National Student Survey (NSS) and the target for student satisfaction aremet
  • Work with colleagues to run focus groups with students who are notinvolved in the NSS cohort to identify issues and develop responses to positively influence future NSSoutcomes;
  • Work with programme teams to develop effective responses to issues identified by students through the NSS and the annual programmemonitoring and evaluation cycles to enhance the studentexperience;

HE Curriculum and Programme Development

  • Teach on a range of HE programmes to an agreed number of hours
  • Lead the application for validation with Open University to facilitate growth of the College HE offer;
  • Support programme teams to design and develop new HE programmes, at Undergraduate and Post-Graduate levels, and take submissions through the approval and validation processes of validating HEIs and the awardingbody;
  • Support programme teams to review, evaluate and developexisting programmes for revalidation andre-approval;
  • Present HE Quality Assurance processes, procedures and regulations to validation and re-validation Panels(external);

Scholarship and Research

The role will lead on the continuing development of the scholarship and research activity that underpins the College’s HE ethos and culture.

  • Work with colleagues to extend the range of scholarship andresearch activities acrossHE;
  • Work with colleagues to identify and develop mechanisms for enabling students to participate with staff in scholarship and researchactivities;

Staff Development and Sharing Good Practice in HE

Working with the Training and Development Coordinator to:

  • Plan the delivery of staff development activities, training and induction for HE staff across all HEprogrammes;
  • Develop in-house training programmes designed to ensure that staff develop appropriate HE knowledge, skills, understanding and experiences thatenhance the student experience on HEprogrammes;
  • Increase the number of HE staff across the college who hold postgraduate qualifications
  • Maintain their own staff development, scholarship and research for thebenefit of the HE provision across theCollege.

External relationships

Working with the Director of Finance and Planning:

  • Liaise with the college’s validating bodies
  • Contribute to QAA Higher Education Reviews of partner HEIs, where appropriate;
  • Maintain and utilise existing relationships with relevant agencies for the benefit of enhancing the college’s HE provision and reputation, e.g. QualityAssurance Agency, Higher Education Funding Council for England,
  • Lead the development of an HE Alumniassociation,
  • Promote the College HE offer to employers and ensure programmes meet their needs and reflect LMI

General Responsibilities

  • Promote equal opportunities and implement the College’s Equality and Diversity policy
  • Provide a secure, safe and friendly learning environment including implementation of the College’s Health and Safety Policy
  • Demonstrate active support for the College organisational values
  • Complete all documents necessary to comply with College HR policies in relation to supervised staff, including sickness forms, appraisal forms, etc (for Director of Curriculum/ Director of Industry, Innovation and SkillsAssist in providing estimates of requirements for revenue and capital expenditure
  • Undertake such other duties as may reasonably be required commensurate with this grade
