MUSIC AND DRAMA – CURRICULUM OUTLINE TERM 1:
This term your child will be involved in Music and Drama specialist subjects. Bernie Thomson (R-3) and James Quigley (4-7) will teach these subjects. The description of learning below is aligned to the Australian Curriculum which can be found:
YEAR 4 – 7 – JAMES QUIGLEY:
During Term 1 students will engage in Drama and Music lessons with a focus on combining the following elements to write, create, perform and critique a short scripted performance for an audience:
Year 4/5:
Students will learn about and be able to explain the importance of elements such as tension, time, place, voice and timing during drama performances. They will view and critique various drama performances and make comparisons to their own performance. Students will practice both scripted and unscripted drama performances and collaborate to plan, make and perform drama that communicates ideas.
They will describe and discuss similarities and differences between music they listen to, compose and perform. They discuss how they and others use the elements of music in performance and composition.
They will collaborate to improvise, compose and arrange sound, silence, tempo and volume in music that communicates ideas.
Year 6/7:
Students will be able to explain how dramatic action and meaning is communicated in drama they make, perform and view.
Students will work collaboratively as they use the elements of drama to shape character, voice and movement in improvisation and performances of devised and scripted drama for audiences.
They will explain how the elements of music are used to communicate meaning in the music they listen to, compose and perform. They describe how their music making is influenced by music and performances from different cultures, times and places.
Use rhythm, pitch and form symbols and terminology to compose and perform music. They sing and play music in different styles, demonstrating aural, technical and expressive skills by singing and playing instruments with accurate pitch, rhythm and expression in performances for audiences.
YEAR 1 – 3 – BERNIE THOMSON:
Music
Year 1-2 Term 1
Students will experience Music through the Kodaly Approach for musical learning and practice. This approach involves learning about music through Music Games and personal and practical engagement.
In Music, students:
- will be challenged to engage more deeply and personally with music
- *will learn deep listening skills
- *will begin to develop aural skills of exploring and understanding what music is – the patterns of beat, rhythm, identify high / low notes and pitch through body percussion, tuned instruments, voice and movement
- *will experience the skill of staying in tune and keeping in time when singing
- *will continue to learn about notation of music and its purpose
Year 3 Term 1
Students will explore meaning and interpretation, forms, and elements of music including:
- rhythm (in Music, combinations of long and short sounds that convey a sense of movement subdivision of sound within a beat),
- pitch ( In Music, the relative highness or lowness of sound)
- dynamics (In Music, dynamics and expression refers to how the sound is performed, including sound qualities
- expression,
- form and structure,
- timbre (specifics of the sound) and texture as they make and respond to music
- Students will begin to explore free notation and standard notation of music.
- Students will practise the skill of learning the lyrics, staying in tune and keeping in time when singing
Drama
1-2 -3 Term 1
Students will experience Drama through games and developing an understanding of “having a go”.
In Drama, students
- will be encouraged to develop a love of personal engagement with drama
- will explore an understanding of what happens in drama and elements of drama
- will explore purpose of drama, role of performer and role of audience
- will explore role, dramatic play and improvisation through rhymes and stories
- will use voice, facial expression, movement and space to present imaginative drama
