imgsrc= Founded in 1892, the Hamilton Watch Company of Lancaster, PA would not officially start producing watches until 1894. Its first chosen name was the “Columbian Watch Co.” but this had already been copyrighted by the Waterbury Company. The name Hamilton was then chosen - a tribute to Lancaster’s founding father, Mr. Andrew Hamilton, a Scottish-born attorney who was instrumental in the town’s growth.
By 1908 Hamilton was producing a lady’s pendant (convertible) watch and, following the USA’s entry into WWI, a small line of military style wire lug trench watches were available for men. Hamilton never looked back, arguably producing the highest quality American made watches from the 1920s through the 1960s.
One such example of Hamilton’s high quality and great design is found in the “YORKTOWNE” wristwatch – a men’s long and i>streamlined model introduced by the company in 1940. This model is near identical to the “CLARK” model of 1936 but with different hands and different mechanism grade.
Triple-signed, its 10 karat yellow gold filled watch measures a nice 42mm end to end by 22mm in width (23mm with original winding crown) or 1-3/4” by 7/8” wide, not including the crown. It has been fully serviced by my trusted watchmaker David and its original 17 jewel, 980 grade manual wind mechanism winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time.
The silver matte enamel finished dial is in excellent condition – professionally restored by the company that has the original Hamilton templates. If I didn’t know it was done I don’t think I could tell on this one. Details include a 60 minute outer track border, 18k solid yellow gold numerals, original gold metal hands and a tonneau-shaped seconds dial with 60 second outer track and ‘sweep’ gold seconds hand. Signed HAMILTON below the 12.
Thesolid glass crystal is in mint condition. The two-piece 10kt yellow gold filled case is tonneau form and is in excellent shape –absolutely no flaws. The originalgold finished winding crown is in excellent order too, operating smoothly.
Turning the watch over I note that the back lid is in excellent condition, free of engravings and with NO wear. Peeking inside I find a clean Seventeen Jewel, manual wind movement, signed Hamilton USA, 17 Jewels – [Grade] 980. The inside of the case back is stamped Hamilton Watch Co., Lancaster, PA – Wadsworth, 10k. Gold Filled with case number below.
This long and sleekYorktownehas been cleaned, oiled & regulated prior to auction, ensuring it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time. Comes fitted with a new men’s length 14mm black deBeer hand crafted lizard (grain) calf leather strap with matching buckle for a fine look. This is definitely an “extra nice” example of a Yorktowne given its superb case – if you like how it looks in the photos you’re going to be equally impressed when it arrives in the mail!
<ulli>Since 1998, Holben's Fine Watches' goal has been happy customers. imgsrc= always loved Bulova, an American company of great repute. It was founded by Czech immigrant Joseph Bulova and based in New York City, where the famous Bulova Observatory was located, high above a skyscraper on Fifth Avenue. Like Gruen, it also had a factory in (Bienne) Switzerland, established in 1912 and dedicated to the production of watch components and their assembly into jeweled movements. The firm is known for its aggressive advertising campaigns and for being the first to advertise on radio – with an announcer stating “B – U – L – O – V – A … 8:00p.m., Bulova Watch Time.”
Pure and simple, this is one truly NICE Art Deco period wristwatch – a ladies 14kt Solid White Gold model with sapphires and diamonds set into the case bezel. This particular model dates to 1928 (as per its date stamp on mechanism) and is complete with its original flower engraved winding crown.
Triple-signed for Bulova (case, dial and mechanism), it measures 31mm lug tip to lug tip and 16.5mm in width (20.5mm with original sapphire tip crown). This works out to be just under 1-1/4 inches long by 5/8 of an inch wide (without crown) and it comes fitted on a cord strap with correct Art Deco fittings and clasp that’s a GOOD size, just over 7-1/2 inches. I can custom size this length for the winner at no cost – just tell me your wrist size by using a piece of string. My Bulova-trained watchmaker David has fully serviced its original 15 jewel, manual wind mechanism to ensure it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time.
The sterling silver, matte enamel finished dial is in excellent condition and without flaw, professionally restored to its original status. It features black enamel painted Arabic numbers, a crisp checkered 60 minute inner track border, original cobalt blue steel Spade-tip hands and a finely engraved Florentine inner dial. Signed BULOVA below the 12 and embossed SWISS at the dial base.
The solid glass crystal is in excellent condition and without flaw. The finely engraved case is a 14kt Solid White Gold and in excellent PLUS condition, truly spotless. The highlight of the bezel has to be the Four Triangular Sapphires & Two Genuine Diamonds, all securely set. The cabochon sapphire winding crown is original and in excellent shape, operating as it should.
Turning the watch over I see that the back lid is in excellent condition- absolutely no wear or engravings. Peeking inside via the secure hinged back case (opens and closes perfectly), I find a fully serviced and high quality Fifteen Jewel, manual wind movement, protected by its own crystal and bezel. Bulova called this the “Dust-Tite Protector” and it provided extra protection for the mechanism. The mechanism is signed Bulova Watch Co., Swiss, [Caliber] 6AP – Fifteen 15 Jewels with date code symbol (crescent moon) indicating a 1928 production date. The inside of the case lid is signed PAT. JUN 10, 1924 – 14K. As Bulova collectors know, this is a Bulova case patent date and correct for this model.
Fully serviced just last week, this watch winds and sets very smoothly while keeping accurate time. It is fitted on a vintage Art Deco cord strap with nicely detailed fittings. It is of a generous (7-1/2 inches) size to fit your wrist and I can also custom size it for the high bidder – just tell me your wrist size. All in all an excellent example of a what an Art Deco watch is all about – American design and Swiss engineering at its finest!
<ulli>Since 1998, Holben's Fine Watches' goal has been happy customers. imgsrc= history of the Girard-Perregaux Watch Company begins in 1791, when the watchmakers Bautte and Mouline founded a factory in Geneva to manufacture watches. In 1856 the watchmaker constant Girard married Marie Perregaux and the unified firm of “Girard – Perregaux” came into being. In 1906 G. Perregaux acquired the earlier firm of Bautte and Mouline, and today the firm is located in La Chaux-de-Fonds. They have always made a name for themselves in the realm of wristwatches through their unique creativity and high quality mechanisms, one of a select few who produce many of its movements entirely in-house. Today, Girard Perregaux watches are among the most expensive timepieces money can buy.
I am pleased to offer for sale the following vintage men’s model from the firm, a “Gyromatic” (self-winding) model from the mid 1950s. Note the sculpted, slightly flared lugs on this 10 Karat Yellow Gold filled model, very nice.
Triple-signed, it measures 39mm lug tip to lug tip and 34mm in width (36.5mm with crown) or just over 1-1/2” long by just under 1-3/8” wide, not counting the winding crown. It is powered by its original and higher grade, 17 jewel rotor automatic Girard-Perregaux mechanism that has been fully serviced by my watchmaker David to ensure it is running well and keeping accurate time.
The ivory color, matte enamel finished dial is in excellent condition – the original metal dial that has been professionally restored to its original status. It features raised gold hour markers, leaf-style gold metal hands and a center ‘sweep’ seconds hand. Signed Girard-Perregaux Gyromatic below the 12 with raised gold “GP” initials.p>The new old stockacrylic crystal is in excellent condition. The GP-signed case is 10kt Yellow Gold Filled and the bezel and the fancy sculpted lugs are in excellent condition with no wear. The gold finished winding crown is in excellent condition too, operating smoothly.
Turning the watch over I see that the screw-down, gold filled back lid is in excellent shape and stamped “10k Gold Filled.” The underside of the lugs are in great condition but I do note there is some edge rub/wear to the opening of the case back, opposite the crown side. This does not affect the use or wear of the watch but it is pointed out for sake of full disclosure. Inside I find a high quality rotor automatic mechanism that is signed Girard-Perregaux & Co., Seventeen 17 Jewels – 21 904 Swiss – GXM. The inside case lid is stamped<iB-1852, G/P ROSS with case number below. The “G/P” stands for Girard-Perregaux.
This watch has been cleaned, oiled & regulated to ensure it winds and sets smoothly and keeps accurate time. It is fitted on a new 18mm black hand crafted deBeerEuropa lizard grain strap with matching yellow gold finished buckle, a nice band for a nice watch.
<ulli>Since 1998, Holben's Fine Watches' goal has been happy customers.
