Process for Proposing

Curriculum

Anyone may develop and route a proposal.

1st:Complete a written proposal using one of the following:

•Curriculum Proposal Form (use for new, substantially changed, major district subject review)

•Materials/Textbook Proposal Form (use for major review and replacement/change)

2nd:Route your proposal for review and suggestions through principal(s) as noted on the Routing Form. Note: The above may require multiple Routing Forms and copies of the proposal for critiques by stakeholders.

OUTLINE FOR WRITING A CURRICULUM PROPOSAL

All information must be typed, single spaced, within the space provided on these sheets. Maintain normal margins and do not reduce size of type in order to increase text. (Attach routing sheets.)

Describe your proposal:

A standardized curriculum is needed for all 11th grade English students. The curriculum and assessments for English 11 need to be aligned to the Michigan High School Content Standards and be common between both high schools. This proposal also includes the need to purchase British Literature textbooks and supplemental materials as well as Hamlet and Lord of the Flies.

What identified needs of children have led to the writing of this proposal?

The State of Michigan now requires that all 11th grade students take English 11(British Literature).

What content standards/benchmarks are addressed by this proposal?

This curriculum will satisfy the 91 high school content expectations.

What are the measurable student outcomes/benchmarks of the proposal?

This curriculum will satisfy the 91 high school content expectations measured with the course midterm and final.

Describe how your proposed program would work (in narrative fashion):

All 11th grade students will take English 11 with a focus on British Literature. The textbook and MISD genre units (“Beowulf” and Canterbury Tales, Hamlet, and Lord of the Flies) will serve as the basic structure for the curriculum. First semester students will study the Anglo-Saxon and Medieval Periods and the English Renaissance. Students will also focus on ACT preparation and persuasive writing during first semester. Second semester students will study Enlightenment, Romanticism, Victorian Age, and Modern Age. Students will also write a research paper in second semester.

How much time in the instructional day will this program consume?

One class period per day (59 minutes) for one year.

What personnel are involved? Certification/qualifications?

All teachers who are highly qualified according to the State of Michigan are eligible to teach this class.

How many students would your proposal involve?

All 11th grade students who do not take AP English.

Has this course been piloted in the district / In a condensed version during one semester

The Michigan Department of Education requires all students to take four years of English and mandate British Literature at the 11th grade level.

Common assessments for midterm and final exams as well as teacher surveys throughout the year.

At the end of first semester and at the end of second semester.

*Note: Prentice Hall has offered one free novel with the purchase of each textbook. We would choose Hamlet as the free novel.

Lord of the Flies – CVHS needs 350 copies of the novel. CVHS currently has 150 copies of the novel. DHS needs 450 copies of the novel. DHS currently has 50 copies of the novel.

Prentice Hall has offered to in-service all English 11 teachers in the workings of the new textbook and supplemental materials at no charge.
