Unit 1 A Birthday Party
Track 1
My Sister’s Party
B: Saturday, May 7th
Today is my sister’s party. We are celebrating her 10th birthday.
She invited girls from her class. They are going to make a lot of noise! My mom said I could invite my friend Jimmy. She said he could come over this morning. He should be knocking on the door in ten minutes. I would like to play with Jimmy, but I can’t.
My mom needs our help. We have to get things ready for the party. We are going to blow up several bright balloons. Then we will put them around the living room. After that, we will set the table with cups and plates. One yellow party hat goes on each plate. My mom would like us to be finished before noon. That’s when the party starts.
Track 2
Patty’s Party
G: Would you help me get things ready for the party?
B: Wait a minute. I need to finish my homework.
G: OK. When you finish, could you set the table? We need ten plates.
B: Sure. I could put a party hat next to each plate, too. Do we have ten hats?
G: Yes, that would be great. Could you also blow up the balloons, please?
B: Sure. I could help with the cake, too.
Unit 2 A Shopping List
Track 3
A Trip to the Store
W:
Gabby,
I got home late from the dentist’s office. Now I have to meet your brother’s teacher at 3:30. Will you help me out? Please go to the store. You have to go right after school. The store closes at 5 o’clock today. I left some money on the shelf by the door. It should be just enough to pay for everything on the list. Also, you have to take the bags on the floor. Then, you won’t have to buy them at the store. Don’t forget to take an umbrella. It looks like it’s going to rain! I’ll be home as soon as I can.
Thanks,
Mom

B: When are you going shopping?
G: I’m going right after basketball practice.

G: Sure, I can do that. I should have just enough to pay for it all.
Unit 3 A Busy Morning
Track 5
Brian’s Saturday Morning
M: Brian’s alarm clock rings at 7 o’clock. He rarely wakes up earlier than that on Saturdays. After he washes his face, he sits down to eat breakfast. His mom often makes pancakes on the weekend. After breakfast, he brushes his teeth. Then he gets dressed. Next, he makes his bed. He usually has to do some chores. He sometimes washes the dishes. Brian looks at the morning schedule. Today, he needs to clean his room. It is his turn to wash the dog, too. When he finishes, he takes a break. He rarely watches TV, though. But today he watches his favorite show. Then he walks the dog to the park. Finally, it is time for soccer practice. Brian never runs out of things to do!
Track 6
Adam’s Morning
G: What time do you usually wake up, Adam?
B: I usually wake up at 7 o’clock.
G: Wow, that’s early! What do you do after that?
B: I always eat breakfast right after I get up. I usually eat fruit, but sometimes I eat eggs and toast.
G: What do you do after breakfast?

Unit 4 Let’s Help Out!
Track 7
Junior Red Cross
W: The Junior Red Cross is a group of kids. But they are not usual kids. These kids help people in need! A fire may destroy a house. Or there may be bad weather. It may destroy thousands of people’s homes. The Junior Red Cross helps those people. There are many ways they help out. They raise money. They hand out food and water. Sometimes poor people need clothes. In the past, the kids made them clothes. Today, they collect clothes. They also fill boxes with things for school. They find students who need them. The boxes are then sent to the students. The kids also visit sick people. They talk to them. They may play games with them, too. They help people in poor countries. They build houses for them and give them food. The Junior Red Cross is a good way for kids to help others.
Track 8
Helping Others
B: Where are you going?
G: I’m going to Tom’s house. We are going to think of ways to raise money for people in need.
B: I think you should sell candy.
G: We could do that. What do you think about washing cars?
B: That’s a great idea. I’ve seen a lot of dirty cars lately. Can I help you out?
G: Sure. Come to Tom’s house with me. You can help us make some signs.
Unit 5 A Fun Show
Track 9
A School Show
B:
March 5th
My school is putting on a show. Students will perform in front of an audience on April 5th. It will be in the evening. This means all of our parents can come. We only have one month to practice! Our teacher said we could do several different things. We can dance, sing, or play music. My friends are going to act out a funny play.
My teacher said I could do tricks. I can do three different tricks. For the show, I could pull a rabbit out of a hat. Or I could ask people questions. I could ask each of them to think of a number. Then I would guess what numbers they are thinking. I could also do bicycle tricks. I’m not sure what I’m going to do!
Track 10
What Can I Do?
G: Our school is putting on a show. Everyone has to perform in it. What should I do for it?
B: You could sing. You have a great voice.
G: I get too nervous when I do that. Maybe I could play the piano.
B: Well, there are five other students doing that. You could form a band with your friends.
G: Yes! I can play the piano. Sara can sing. Dan can play the guitar. We could make a band!
B: And I can play the drums!
G: That’s a great idea!
Unit 6 An Interesting Planet
Track 11
Mars
W:
Mars is the fourth planet from the sun. It is about half the size of Earth. Mars is often called the “red planet.” This is because it looks red. Even though it is red, it is not hot. In fact, Mars is much colder than Earth. It also has the highest mountain on any planet that we know of. It is three times taller than Mt. Everest.
Are there any living things on Mars? Some people believe there might be. Some movies also tell stories about things living on Mars. People have sent machines to Mars to look for them. These machines go around Mars and take pictures. They send these pictures back to Earth. No living thing has been found on Mars yet. But people continue to do research to try to find them.
Track 12
Up in Space
B: Do you know anything about the planets?
G: I know there are eight of them. They move around the sun. Jupiter is the biggest planet.
B: Oh! Do you know anything else about Jupiter?
G: Yes, I know that it has four big moons and many small ones. It is the fifth planet from the sun. Do you know anything about the planets?
B: I know about Mars. It’s half the size of Earth, isn’t it?
G: Yes, and it is very cold there.
Unit 7 Ways to Travel
Track 13
Between Two Countries
M:
How do people travel from England to France? There is a wide sea between the two countries. This sea is called the English Channel. Before 1994, people traveled by airplane or boat. Boats are slow, and airports are busy. Now people can also take a train. Whoever thought they could do that? Where would a train go in the sea?
One man had an idea in 1802. He thought the train could go under the water. What a great idea! But people laughed at it then. In 1994, almost two hundred years later, the “Chunnel” opened for use. It is a tunnel under the English Channel. Trains, cars, and trucks can all use this. Why is it called the Chunnel? It’s another name for the Channel Tunnel. The Chunnel allows people to make the trip in less time.
Track 14
A Different Way
B: I think riding an elephant would be a fun way to travel.
G: Have you ever done that before? I have. It can be scary.
B: When and where did you do that?
G: We rode elephants on our vacation in Asia last year. I was scared I would fall off.
B: What do you think is a fun way to travel?
G: I think riding in a flying car would be fun!
B: What a great idea!
Unit 8 A Special Holiday
Track 15
Lunar New Year
W: Lunar New Year is a popular holiday in China. It can last for fifteen days. Luck is very important during this time. Red is used everywhere. People think it is a lucky color. It is said that a monster comes around during this time. The monster doesn’t like red or loud noises. People use fireworks. These hurt its ears. They scare it away.
There are rules to follow at this time, too. On the first day, people cannot take baths. Also, it is bad to take out the trash. It is said to take away luck. On the next day, people hang out with their families. They can hang out with friends, too. On the third day, they cannot visit others. Some people do not agree about these rules. They think it is better to just have fun.
Track 16
Our Favorites
B: What is a popular holiday in your country?
G: Many people celebrate New Year’s Day.
B: What does your family do?
G: We have a big meal at our house. My whole family comes. I can hang out with my cousins. That’s my favorite part. We can play outside in the snow.
B: That sounds fun. My favorite holiday is Halloween because I like to dress up.
G: I like getting a lot of candy, too!
Unit 9 Animals with Eggs
Track 17
The Life of Frogs
M: In spring, a mother frog lays her eggs in water. The eggs stick together to form a big ball. Frogs lay many eggs at one time. This is because the eggs will face many dangers. One danger is that some fish eat frog eggs. So many of the eggs will not live. Some frogs stay with their eggs to watch them. Other frogs don’t.
After about ten days, a baby comes out of each egg. They look like little fish. But they won’t look like fish for long. Slowly, they turn into frogs. After about six weeks, their back legs start to grow. Their tails get smaller. Their legs get bigger. Then front legs start to grow. After about fourteen weeks, they finally become young frogs. Later, they will lay their own eggs.
Track 18
In the Sea
G: Sea turtles lay their eggs on the beach, don’t they?
B: That’s right. They lay their eggs in a hole. Then they cover them with sand.
G: What happens when the babies come out of the eggs?
B: They climb out of the hole. They don’t stay on the beach for long.
G: Why not?
B: They face many dangers on the beach. One danger is that other animals will try to eat them. So they have to get to the sea as fast as they can.
Unit 10 Be Good, Kids!
Track 19
At the Museum
W: We have a fun day planned for next Friday. You should not be absent. Our class is going to the museum! There are many expensive things in the museum. I want everyone to be careful.
Here are some things to remember. Make sure you keep your hands by your sides. Do not touch any of the pieces of art. Why? First of all, you could break something. Second, the museum workers might think you are stealing something. Please be quiet in the museum. Walk in a line, and do not run. There will be many other people there. So, we need to act politely. Also, do not bring food or drinks inside. We will eat lunch at the café in the museum. We will come back to school after lunch.
Track 20
How to Act
B: I’m excited to see Mary dance!
G: Me, too. But remember to be quiet. There are many people here. We don’t want to be impolite.
B: Right. Make sure you turn off your phone, too.
G: Thanks. I forgot about that.
B: Do you need to use the bathroom? Go now if you do. Don’t leave during the show.
G: Thanks! I have just enough time to do that.
Unit 11 What’s on TV?
Track 21
Saturday Morning TV
M: Pete and his father like to watch TV. Every Saturday, they wake up early. They look at the list of shows. Then they pick shows to watch together. Agreeing on what to watch is hard to do. Pete’s dad likes to watch the news every day. The news comes on at 7 and 10. He also likes to travel. He enjoys learning about other places. Seeing them on TV is fun for him, too. Pete likes shows about police and sports. This Saturday, there is a police show on at 10 o’clock. Pete really wants to watch it. However, his dad won’t let him. He says those shows aren’t for kids. Both of them like movies. They like shows about animals, too. They do not like shows about cooking or beauty. What will they watch this week?
Track 22

G: Do you want to watch TV together?
B: Sure! What’s on TV tonight?
G: There is a movie coming on at 8 o’clock. But it’s three hours long.
B: That’s too long for me. A soccer game comes on in ten minutes.
