RE: Banking Operations Management Minor
The department requests that the Operations Management Minor be banked as of Fall 2010 Semester. The rationale for doing this is as follows:
- Students in the minor have progressively decreased from the high of 25 in Fall 2006 to the current number of 5 Fall 2009. Four of the five students will graduate by the end of this academic year. Efforts by both the OM faculty have not changed this declining situation. Discussions over the years with other faculty from logical majors to pair up with the OM minor (e.g., Accounting, Engineering, and MIS) have not produced significant results.
- Low enrollments in majors/minors is a concern for AACSB accreditation.
- Given the current State and University budget situation, we can’t justify offering low enrollment courses. For example, OM 414 Operations Planning and Control, a required course for the minor, typically has 10 students or less when offered once an academic year. The course is being offered this Fall 2009 semester as an arranged class to 4 students so that they can graduate with the minor.
- Suspending the minor would allow the limited number of OM faculty to focus on offering OM 334 Operations Management and a few other OM courses that are generally attractive to business students as electives. Also please note that OM 464 Project Management has been proposed as a required course for Business Administration and Human Resource majors.
This request has been discussed in the department meeting and voted on and is supported by both OM faculty. In addition the department requests that the following OM courses will be banked as well.
Courses to be BANKED as of Fall 2010
Course # / Description / Reason for Banking CourseOM 398 / Internship 1-9 S.H.
Credits will not be counted in the Operations Management minor, but as general elective credits. Prerequisite: concurrent enrollment in OM 399. P/NC only. / Will be using the BUSA 398 internship course since all OM courses will have designator MGMT and listed under Business Administration Department
OM 399 / Internship Problems 3 S.H. Prerequisite: courses that must be completed prior to an internship vary by program. See department for list of requirements. Minimum 2.0 GPA. Grade only. / Will be using the BUSA 399 internship course since all OM courses will have designator MGMT and listed under Business Administration Department
OM 434 / Quality and Productivity Management 3 S.H. Study of the principles of quality and productivity management is the main subject of this course. Emphasis is placed on new and advanced concepts found in the U.S. and abroad, including such topics as systems thinking, reducing complexity, ISO 9000, and activity-based costing. Prerequisite: OM 334. Grade only. / Contents of this course will be combined with the contents of MGMT 435 Managing for Quality
OM 444 / Operations Strategy 3 S.H.
This course is an application of production and operations management principles in real life situations. This is done through analysis of cases, with particular emphasis on linking operations strategy to marketing strategy. Prerequisite: OM 414. Grade only. / This course has not been offered for several semesters. Strategy topic is covered in other courses.
The remaining OM courses will have the designator changed from OM to MGMT for better exposure for the courses to students when looking at course offerings as well as because the OM Minor, if approved, is banked and also the move of courses to be under the MGMT designator better reflects the trend of other AACSB institutions.
