Mendham Recreation Committee Minutes: March 8, 2017
In attendance: Kevin Lanahan, Ned Panfile, Stan Witczak & Bruce DiBisceglie
1. Communications
a. Feb ’17 Mendham Borough Recreation Committee (MBRC) meeting minutes reviewed.
i. Minutes and agendas posted to Mendham Borough website.
b. Communications:
i. Various field requests, day camp employment and band booklet updates.
c. Meetings:
i. Bruce attended the February 21, 2017 Borough Council meeting.
1. Bob & Helen Cleary were named Grand Marshals by Mayor & Council.
2. John Andrus commented that the Clearys have provided service in many different way. This will be the basis for the parade theme.
3. Pail Ferraro reported that work at Mud Hole will begin in April
a. The pond will be unavailable for the annual fishing derby.
b. Current fish will be harvested and returned upon completion
4. Rick Merkt reported on improvements to upgrade facilities at West Field.
a. A feasibility study will be all inclusive
i. Handicap access to be addressed
ii. A possible permanent bathroom/snack bar will be considered.
2. Field Allotment Status:
a. Bruce had posted the 2017 field allotment calendar to the Borough website.
i. Chester/Mendham lacrosse has been added. Ned added that C/M Lax also trains at Mendham HS.
3. 2017 Recreational Booklet Update:
a. Bruce collected and complied all updates to the 2017 booklet and submitted to Hawk Graphics on February 26th.
b. First draft was received back from Hawk on March 8th.
c. Bruce and Pete Wright (Twp Rec Director) will proof and return by March 13th.
d. Penny will get Borough mailing information to Hawk by March 17th.
e. April 1st street date still looks promising.
4. Summer Concert, Movies, Day Camp Updates:
a. Concerts:
i. In addition to Carnaby Street (July 2), Kimon & the Prophets (July 9) and Larry Stevens (July 23). Bruce has booked the Fab Forward Band for July 30th as he did not hear back from the other to options (Tom Rice and Cats & Dogs)
b. Movies:
i. Bruce sent a survey to committee members about moving the Aug 2 movie to Aug 1 to align with the Day Camps Red & Blue Night Out and National Night Out. On a scale of 1-5 (1=no and 5=yes), the consensus was 4.67.
ii. Bruce contracted for Frozen (July 12) and Moana (Aug 1).
c. Day Camp:
i. The Day Camp Employment application window closed on Feb 28 (4:30pm) with 117 applicants. All are being entered into the database and first-time applicants will be called for interviews that will run late-March through mid-April.
5. Parade Pre-Game:
a. The Clearys were contacted and enthusiastically accepted to serve as the 2017 Grand Marshals for the Labor Day Parade on September 4th.
b. Based on the comments made at the Feb 21 Borough Council meeting (see 1.c.i.2 above) the parade theme will be “Boundless Service to Mendham” to honor the Clearys.
6. Prior Business:
a. Mendham Borough has received the 2016 Municipal Alliance Grant of $1,750 for recognizing D.A.R.E. with the Concert and Movie Summer Series. A portion of this will be used to pay for the Day Camp/Concert/Movie/D.A.R.E. magnets to be provided by the Day Camp. Magnets will be sent to all Borough residents with children at the 2017 Day Camp free of charge.
7. New Business:
a. Bruce & Kevin inquired as to Ken O’Brien’s replacement as DPW Director. Stan reported that the decision is forthcoming and in the interim, the points of contact are Mr. Venizia and Lisa Smith.
